vti_cnf vti_pvt inquiries - 6/2/2001 20:15:00
I have finally been able to use FrontPage to publish my site. Basically all I needed to uplaod were my index page and my images folder. I was wondering however why my vti_cnf and vti_pvt files are not included in the upload.

Aren't these critical files that need to uploaded for server extensions to work?

vti filkes & directories are indeed needed for FP extensions - but "uploading" may be the problem, you should "Publish" to a FP enabled server.

You can use a non-FP enabled server and ftp your files but:

You need to go to page options and uncheck the box re FP extensions (so anything in edit view that NEEDS them will be greyed out). This includes hit counters, FPs DHTML, and Guest books, and - I think - mailto forms.

Then the Tools menu, click Web Settings, and then click the Advanced tab. Select the Show documents in hidden directories check box to show files in hidden folders.

When you ftp the site up for the first time - send everything - particularly vti_private which contains web structure info. After that, don't bother unless you've made major navigation changes (navigation bars, shared borders) then you need to send them again.

Same thing will save you if your host decides to 'Upgrade' your FP extensions (or 're-install' them (thus wiping out all your existing navigation.) The particularly relevant file appears to be "doctodep".

Janet,

Nice response; good information, but I question the statement above. I have deleted and re-installed extensions countless times with no erasure of my vti folders or the information within them (on Apache servers). I had an NT host tell me once that that is what happens, but I have never experienced that result.

You're probably right, Phil, in that if server extensions are 'properly' installed/upgraded there should be no problem.

But I experienced a problem with a host when ALL navigation bars suddenly disappeared. Hosts denied any knowledge (as they tend to do). I republished (several times) - no result.

I tried to recreate the effect on my computer by systematically deleting and restoring vti-pvt files and discovered that deleting doctodep removed all navigation bars instantly. I then demanded ftp access and discovered that the doctodep file on the server was about a fifth of the size of the one on my computer. I ftp'd up the relevant file - all navigation miraculously reappeared. They then tried to tell me I must have 'damaged' the file but as I didn't have ftp access (and hadn't, at that stage, worked out how to show hidden files in FP, there was no way (and I hadn't touched the site for 2 days before it happened.)

Ah, once again, a perfect example of a host who knows very little about FP.
