Server Speeds - 6/9/2001 19:00:00
I'm looking for a new home for my frontpage website. This guy has a great price and says he support frontpage. I want my website to be on a fast server so it will download quicker. This guys states he has super fast and reliable 155mbconnection. Is this fast? Faster than T3?

155 MBS is a OC3 equal to 3 T3's (or DS3's) Most host will have multiple OC3's (45MBS).

Depending on the traffic of ALL the sites hosted, a DS3 is probably enough - do they have a alternate route with another backbone provider?

The speed at which your site downloads (or loads) is obviously influenced by the network connection, but other factors are:

1) Shared server or dedicated? If shared, how many accounts are allowed per machine -vs- capacity? (The lower the better)

2) How large is your site and what kind of content? Flash gateways pages? Tons of graphics?

The list is endless, but suffice it to say all the elements must be considered, not just the network connection. I'm sure you know all this, but it bears repeating.

Also, since you have a FrontPage site, how much can your host help you with the software? Not many, I'm guessing.

GIL, it's good to know that it is a fast connection dependant upon traffic. I don't know if he have a alternate route with another backbone provider. But I will ask today and thanks for your help.

TARHELL, you are right I have learned there are many factors involved with speed. I want a quick loading page on a quick server. Thanks for the tip on 1awebhosting.

Just one more note, with the improvements in web server software (and hardware) you'll find more and more sites capable of being hosted on a server without truly affecting the performance of the server. So it's almost impossible to say just how many sites you limit a server. We ofcourse still stick to the old NT rule of thumb 250 but we've seen presentations of Windows2000 sites hosted several thousand and am familiar with unix boxes doing the similar. The problem you run into when trying to implement a box and host similar (thousands of sites) is how many of these sites are dynamic content (asp, cgi, etc) and how many are static (.html, .htm). Static pages take almost ZERO CPU and are mostly memory.

One more note, you'll run into guys that are hosted on T1's or even ISDN and their sites fly whereas you may run into a site hosted on a OCwhatever and wonder why the one with the big connection isn't faster. There's alot to it. Check out a couple sites hosted by the guys you're looking at and see how they perform. Some people like to run netmechanic against a site hosted at a new potential host (this is a pretty biased service though as in the past I've found it to be colocated with interland and thus interland's servers showed almost zero delays).

Okay a little more than just 2 cents..

Good luck with the hunt.

Jess
