Should I resell web hosting? - 6/14/2001 20:41:00
First, let me say there has been several times you folks have saved my butt. I don't know what I would do without you! Now, should I mess with reselling web hosting. I have designed 8 sites now, with 4 more in the works. It looks like a good way to up the revenues. I have been getting clients signed up for hosting as a third party anyway (just have not been PAID for the service). What are the drawbacks? Who should I trust with my clients sites?

Well, I've stopped recommending myself and my co-moderators for hosting, just because Therefore, I would suggest Digihost.com - they don't look too impressive, but whatever. They're reliable, cheap, and have a good reseller package. The drawbacks only exist in terms of how you set your clients up. Normally, they'll call you for support and you'll mostly call Digihost. If you're prepared to be the middle man, it's a nice way to earn a small side income. --Bri ------------------ "Bother," said Pooh, as Piglet was assimilated by the Borg. ------------------- Work, work, work: http://www.appercept.co.uk Out of office hours: http://www.darlingbri.co.uk

My Personal opinion is yes you should and I recommend this to every webdesigner. BUT you want to be clever about it. You don't want to just offer webhosting but you want to offer prepaid maint. and hosting. Say you get a reseller account for $10/month. Charge your client $50 and tell him that includes 1-2 hours of free changes/mods a month. After that, it's the regular rate. Now the downside to reselling is that you become the first line of support for your clients. If they have a problem they go to you. But the advantage is that you get residual income. The key is that one you have a customer you want to upsell/add-on and provide all the services they need within reason (You don't want to cause yourself more headaches if the money isn't there). Anyway, that's just what I recommend to the designers that host with us. You'd be surprised how many are losing out by not reselling. If you have 8 sites, that's $160/month (assuming $20/month they are payind for hosting) that someone else is getting. If you resold at $50 and paid $10/month for each account then you'd be pocketing $320 a month extra! Oh and one more thing, pre-paid hosting is a key. You don't want to go back to the client every month, get a couple months in advance so you keep your paperwork to a minimum. Jess
