Affiliate marketing questions - 3/11/2004 12:07:00
Hi, I am starting to look into affiliate marketing . I basically am wanting to lists links to other sites and drive sales to them for a %. I really was looking for affiliate text links not banners, not CJ or the likes. I am looking for the end company offering the affiliate plan, not a middle person. I have read a few things on this topic but just get more confused. 1) How do you find the suppliers (who you push sales to) for a genre? 2) What tools are in your arsenal and what are there functions? 3) On 2) what tools did you start out with as the "basics"? 4) With getting traffic to the inital site how do you get the inital site to rank in the SERPs with little or no content? 5) Is content sometimes provided by the affiliate company or do I need to generate from scratch? 6) What are the main buzz word terms (example CPM) and what do they mean? I have some ideas from my research but wanted to see what the veterans do and use. TIA, Brian

Thanks Gail. On question 4 most sites I do utilize heavy content as one factor. I was wondering in leaving that factor out what other means can be utilized. I did some research on Mojojo's post on content VS. links and I have to agree on that this style site would be a link thing over content. I was assuming oveture/Adsense on the ad end but I was also thinking about hitting smaller site owners and placing text ads with them, less money involved. Also the smaller PPC directories would come in a little less on the click amount. They would produce less traffic of course but should produce a better ROI. Brian

Someone contacted me the other day by email and wanted to place their ad on my site. This is something that never entered my mind and, to be quite frank, I wouldn't even know what to charge if I did. gail

What are you talking about here? Gail, think like adsense but you are in charge. Say you have a left side column. You sell add space and then make a script to rotate in text ads that people pay to have run on your sites. Be prepared to be able to quote page views for a given time and page views for a month of traffic. Also you can charge more for a more prominent placement. Your site I think would be ideal for this. Just run it in place of or under the adsense (I would suggest this as a trial before severing your AS account) column that you have currently. quote:
Have you looked here ? They seem to have lots of information. This is one thing I am fishing for. However with the multitude of affiliate forums I am seeking someone who frequents them and has found value in a particular one VS. the slew of cr@p ones. I will check out this one, thank you. Brian

There are some questions I would like you to answer before I properly direct you to a positive conclusion. What is the content of the site from which you will be referring potential buyers to the affiliate programme? You need to be careful to read the contracts from a legal standpoint as there are certain prohibitions particularly with the utilization of trademarked words in YOUR meta descriptions and keywords. The answers you seek are actually quite complex and if you would like to email me directly, I will walk you through it. Oh...and I operate my own affiliate programme through www.mhacorp.com that might have some benefit to you! Cheers

What is the content of the site from which you will be referring potential buyers to the affiliate programme? At this point I am researching. This was my first post. At this I am in general base learning mode. I plan on doing a few out of the gate. Some base general ideas are: 1) Push one item and hand off the sale. 2) Do a information site which has affiliate links sprinkled thorough it being text and banner ads. Somehow in my gut I think the text based ads will get more click throughs. quote:

Have you looked here ? Turns out they have a very nice site. I spent most of Saturday reading and absorbing. I only made it trough three sub forums. Brian

Shoot, i got an error had had to redo my post. 1) Do a search for affiliatee programs and you will have a never ending list to choose from. 2) THe tools depend on what you are going to do. 3) My basics were free autoresponders, complementary affiliate programs. 4) You wont rank without content. 5) you should be fammiliar with the products you offer which usually means buying them. IF you use them you should be able to write copy about them. 6) See http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/CPM.html

I think you can surf on the products' website. This way can help you know about the information directly. And then you can register to become a member of their affiliate program, which makes you a direct reseller, not a middle one. In my view, I think you should to find a none-cost affiliate program, then, you need to pay more fee. 123 flash chat is a good example.
