cgi-bin - 3/12/2004 12:11:18
Can anyone tell me if there is anything specifically unique about the cgi-bin. I ask because it was accidentally deleted. Can I create a folder and name it cgi-bin, or "get" from a different site and "put" to this one in Dreamweaver? Or I am I stuck asking my hosting company to create a new one for me? Thanks.

Unless you're using Perl (CGI) scripting on your site you don't need the cgi-bin (Common Gateway Interface - Binaries) directory.

If you do use scripting that requires it, you'll need to get your host involved because they'll have to configure permissions for the directory anyway...

I will be for forms and what not, but right now I'm trying to get awstats to run from with in the site publicly. By permissions do you mean read/write etc.. and the corresponding 3 digit number? Cause I know I can do that from with in the control panel. If so what would it need to be set to? Thanks

If you're able to set the folder permissions then you may not need to contact the host. I always do as a matter of courtesy and it usually pays off if there's anything the host needs to change on your account to allow scripting.

The settings will probably depend on what your script demands, but each script usually comes with install instructions that will include server settings.

I have some notes at home but I don't recall the numbers off the top of my head.
