Server Error: Cannot open file: C:\My Documents\My Webs... - 6/20/2001 20:21:00
Hello,

I am the owner of ultimateyankees.com and have a question. I recently bought a new computer and installed all my old software on to the machine. I use FrontPage 2000, within Windows 98SE, to edit my page and then publish it to a server. Unfortunately, I am getting an error. I can open any file, edit any file, but cannot save anything without getting the following error,

"Server Error: Cannot open file: C:\My Documents\My Webs\_vti_pvt\service.lck" for writing"

I get this error no matter what. Even if I just type in "TEST" and try to save it, I get the same message. I tried changing my network settings, but to no avail. I even went to the "help" menu and did the "detect and repair" and basically reinstalled FrontPage 2000. Still the same error.

I have no idea what this is. I emailed Microsoft and they said it sounded like the server was not connecting and to contact my server provider. That doesn't make sense to me as I can still publish to my server, I just cannot save anything. Please let me know if you have any ideas. I searched for that file on my computer, but it is not there. I am lost. Thank you for your time.

Have a look here...

You basically have to uninstall and then reinstall the FP extensions on your local machine....

Thank you. How do you Uninstall Frontpage extensions? I have no idea. I have that page from Microsoft printed out, but have no idea how to do it. I have searched Frontpage all over, but have no idea how to uninstall the extensions and reinstall them. I am a one man operation that works out of his home and depends on Frontpage to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you...

Sincerely,

I've never done it before. You may want to wait until someone comes along and confirms that I'm right on this.

You will need your FP disc to install the server estensions.

I believe that you uninstall PWS server extensions by doing Start > Control Panel > Adminstrative Tools > Server Extensions Administrator > Highlight FP Server Extensions > Remove.

Then you would open the FP disc > find server extensions and double click to install them again.

Worst case scenario, you just completely reinstall FrontPage. That wouldn't harm any of your local webs.

In your administrative tools go to IIS and go to the site where you want to remove the server extensions. Right click on the folder and select "Tasks". There should be an option to check the server extensions as well as one to remove them. Once removed, there should be an option to configure the Frontpage Extensions.

Thanks...Where do I find the administrative tools? I have searched through my control panel, network settings, and through FrontPage. I cannot find it anywhere. I cannot even get the "security" option to hightlight under my toolbar list. Thanks for any help.

The "server error :" issue comes because of security settings issue. If you check the security tab of the website folder, frontpage will automatically create a user for the role which performs a publish providing write access. If that user is not there we get the file writing error.

To resolve this go to the IIS server, right click on the website, in the all tasks select check and repair frontpage server extensions.

The problem should get resolved. :)

The security issue should
