What's the thinking on PayPal's shopping cart feature? The way it looks to me is as an easy way for me to get selling my pictures from www.GlasgowHat.com. Does it work well? Is it secure? Are there better alternatives?

Paypal is certainly quick and easy. As long as you're not needing sophisticate shipping options and since they no longer make people sign up for an account to pay via paypal, I'd say go for it. One of my websites uses it and has used it for quite some time and has had no problems with it.

If you go with a free e-cart like Mal's you'll have to have a merchant account to accept credit cards, which can be costly. Paypal does take a percentage of your sales when the customers pay by credit card...but in my opinion, it's a great way to start out. You can make your own shopping cart buttons if you don't like paypals. Once you get more sales you might want to upgrade.

thanks Peppergal; I've played around with it and it seemed pretty easy. I'm happy to let Paypal take a chunk of the cash for each sale whilst I build it up.

Pay Pal is certainly for me - been the best option while i establish a web site - once established you can then look into more efficient mehods.
The way I see it - why pay out for setting up merchant accounts when at the end of the day - you never really know if your website is going to take off or be a dud.

Just a heads up. The Glasgow hat link in your gallery has a table with no images in it.
I thought you might want to know.

I actually just incorporated a PayPal shopping cart section on my site. It explains all about it, how it works, and why someone would want to use it.

I would be very careful with PayPal though. I have heard bad things about their chargeback system. Basically, if you cannot provide faxed proof of a sale, I wouldn't use PayPal at all.

If I pay you $500, and you do not give me a recipt, then I can get the money back, AND keep the product. However, you may always fake a recipt and make it look legit. My friend has lost $4000 due to chargebacks. (He sells software).
I have never had a problem with sales in PayPal. I speak with almost every client before we discuss payment, so I get a level of trust with them. Just had to give you a heads up on it.

Thanks for the info Bobby! Whilst I've set up the pages, I haven't actually tried purchasing anything yet; does PayPal not automatically generate a receipt? Do I need to generate one myself? Is this easy?

Thanks Dave, but it's not me! I'm just doing the site for an artist that I met (bought a painting; "What no website? Want one...?") last year. I got a painting of my house in return for the site...

btw like you homepage, except your drop capped 'a' at is halfway down the paragraph in mozilla firefox and you have focused spelt "focussed"

Thanks Dave; I've looked, but what page is "focussed" on? Also; did you mean the dropped cap "W"? It does look abit skew wiff in Firefox, but I think I'll have to let it slide...

Hmm. From a Paypal promo ad I saw:

Secure

Seller Protection Policy gives you 100% coverage from chargebacks due to fraud on eligible transactions

Low loss and dispute rates make receiving payments with PayPal safer than other online credit card transactions

Is this believable?

If you are using PayPal as a sales shopping cart and you want to forward URL address for the paid customer to receive the needed page link to download after the paid purchase your code shows this URL directly in your source code provided by PayPal. A very bad oversight by PayPal to stop thieves from simply viewing your source code and going directly to the downlaod file within the code and getting what you are selling absolutely free.I am trying to fix this problem with my site.

With active coding, such as IPN, you can check the status of the purchase - this will ensure the user just doesnt use the return link.
