But there's got to be a point where the goverment won't allow parents to homeschool their kids any longer right? maybe up until highschool?

I know highschool's horrible for most kids, i'm a senior highschool student, but being a teen in Canada really isn't as bad as being a teen in the states these days.
:)

The government has no say - thank you to the Home Education Act of 1985. I will educate my children all the way through.

Some reading for you:

:) thanks!

But all through highschool? That's really tough stuff....physics, calculus, discrete :):) Would one be able to obtain a highschool diploma homeschooled and move on to univeristy? Where would the grades come from?

It will not be tough for me - maybe for some, but not me. I can Barter, use the Net, or what I prefer just learn it too.

This is a great read on this: http://www.brightideaspress.com/articles/hs_through_highschool.htm

You only are issued a "High School Diploma" if you graduate High School.
You get a GED if you choose not to complete high school and take the test.
You recieve a "Homeschool Diploma" if you are homeschooled.

This is recognized by most Universities.

There are no "grades"....

You have to look at it differently then you are :) It is not like the public education system.

The concept of outcome based education in America does not catch on because of teacher unionization.

I'm sorry I didn't follow through on this thread. Lori, I had no idea you homeschool - that's great. So do I, and I plan on doing it right through high school as well.

One quote I see a lot is "Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire..."

My daughter is seven-almost-eight and devours chapter books - when I was her age, I was still looking at picture books. I dont' think I touched a chapter book until I was in 5th grade.

Anyway...sorry to contribute to the thread hijack here, but I had to get my 2cents worth in. LOL

Perhaps "certified" doesn't mean the same in the US, but in UK lingo most of the teachers I know would be horrified to think that they should be certified. They probably should be though

In US public schools you must be "certified" to teach. certified = a state teaching license which derives from around 40 credit hours in "education curriculum" mostly psychobabble psuedo-science. There is starting to be a rebellion against it. If you have a doctorate in math but lack these courses you couldnt teach intro algebra. What is really bad is that the license requires a full time 6month unpaid intershipt (student teaching) which frequently prevernts experienced adults who want to make a career change from doing it - they cant afford the hit of 6 month no pay.

sorry about the the rant..lol
ps i like home schooling but i wouldnt agree out-of hand that it makes children "more social". Unless the parent inentionally gets them involved in social activities, it can dwarf their soical development - home all day with just mom and siblings. on the ohter hand, it cn help them avoid some of the bad social peer pressure - lol here i go again

Homeschool Social Activity and Emotional Development

According to leading doctors, observed children in free play and group interaction activities. Conventionally schooled children had significantly more problem behaviors than did the home educated. This is probably because the primary models of behavior for the home educated are their parents.

Home educated children are more mature and better socialized than are those sent to school, according to Thomas Smedley's personal interaction and communications approach to understanding socialization.

· Studying actual observed behavior, Dr. Shyers (1992) found the home educated have significantly lower problem behavior scores than do their conventional school agemates.

· Multiple studies show that the home educated have positive self-concepts.

· Homeschool students are regularly engaged in field trips, scouting, 4-H, and community volunteer work, and their parents (i.e., their main role models) are significantly more civically involved than are public school parents.

"Homeschooled children are lacking in opportunities for social interaction"
In the homeschool community this question is usually met with looks of disbelief and a quiet chuckle. There are literally hundreds of opportunities in most states for homeschooled children to get together for activities. Roller skating, theater groups, study groups, archery lessons, swimming, park days, recitals, ski outings --- the list goes on and on. And, although all families do not enjoy access to this wide variety, most do have the opportunity to play sports, to join community groups like scouts or 4-H and to participate in religious communities.

Children have the opportunity to develop friendships with children of widely varying ages. They learn social skills from their families, and, in a supportive community, from those who are more experienced at getting along in the world.

Sorry for the rant...:)

Naturally shy kids will still be naturally shy whether or not they go out with other kids or not. Naturally boisterous outgoing kids will be outgoing, whether or not they go out with other kids or not.

When my daughter was little everyone thought she'd be harmed by being kept home with me. She was very shy and didn't want to talk to strangers or even friends of the family. Until she hit about age 6, and now she talks a blue streak to anyone. My other two are the same way. They will talk to other kids at the park and in the stores and at the beach.

Most often, THEY are the ones who are snubbed by kids who are too rude to respond to a "Hello, what's your name?" and instead keep on doing what they're doing.

My kids don't have any extra social interaction other than church once a week, bible study twice a month, and occasional trips to the library and our weekly shopping errands. Yet, they are polite, adjusted, and can talk to old people, young people, children, and teens with equal grace and finesse that one would not really expect of 6 and 8 year olds. (My 4 year old is still a bit like a toddler but she'll mature...)

"Socialization" is a buzzword and a myth. Our goal is to raise children who are polite and can interact well with others. And homeschooling does that much better than being immersed with a peer group of children who learn from "the pack". (think Lord of the Flies here...)

that settles it then - I have to stay away from Karens kids, or they'll be ignorant, arrogant, impolite little brats. Nah, they'll just be a bit more outgoing than most would like:)

Good for you Karen - I bet your kids are wonderful!

Homeschooling is the only way for me. I would never consider anything else. Children are NOT educated in what is important (IMPO) by the public system. They are taught by standards, and my kids are too good for "the standards".

So are yours.

Kids deserve to be educated individually and not in a group where the slowest learner is the one catered to.

People care more about the MONEY they make then WHAT they are making in their children. I have many years after to dedicate to success, and only roughly eighteen to make a difference in my child.

Nothing ever said in rebuttal will change my mind.
