primarily fireworks (MX), but for more photo work - PS 6 first then optimise in fireworks.

it's so good for vector work! oh was just having a nose on your site (very nice!) and noticed that you have a couple of small typos on the main page of http://www.seaspecialties.com/ quote:
Sea Specialties Inc has built it's reputation on a smoked fish product line... "Inc" should have a period/full-stop after it because it's an abbreviation, and "it's" should be "its". thought you might like to know

Will you please contact that client and tell her your thoughts about that... LOL!!!! I had every "Inc." in that whole site with a period after it, and I was told to remove it because the company name is SEA SPECIALTIES INC (take a peek at the logo) no period - poor english, and not what I would do, but what do you do, eh? The "its" has been changed - thanks!

Dave -- You say you optimize in Fireworks. For what reasons? I have both PS and Fireworks MX, and use them both, although I have a tendency to open PS first just out of habit. I'm always willing to learn -- and if Fireworks does better optimization I might make myself use it more often. Thanks, Nancy

IMO FW (fireworks) optimisation is slightly better than PS, but it's hard to show concrete evidence! I find it a bit disruptive to have to go into image ready to optimise (or at least the save for web window) when fireworks is just there in the same (tabbed) window. I like the sharpen jpeg feature as well if you need unfuzzy text on a photobackground. To be honest i'm not sure whether it's actually *significantly* better or easier but it's maybe more my preferred working method. i also find the batch processing easier. well give it a whirl and see if it is better for you - i suggest maybe making one gif (pretend logo or something) and one photo. I would probably do the whole thing in fireworks but the crop tool is better than in PS (though there is an extension for FW to improve the basic crop tool) and levels are a bit more responsive. oh one more thing you might like to check out in FW is the 'mac preview' (view > mac preview- if i remember rightly) which presents your image (vector/bitmap) using mac gamma

in my opinion the best tool for web graphics is Fireworks, because it seamlessly works with bitmaps and vectors, and its vector capabilities are so much better than PS. it has pretty much the functionality bitmap wise of Photshop (though Photoshop is better/deeper) i think it's optimisation is better it uses live effects, even on bitmaps so everything remains editable (bit like PS) it has loads of plugins (extensions) most of which are useful possibly Photoshop's bevel tools are a little smoother FW renders text really well, and MX 2004 has customisable anti-aliasing as well as system, and the usual crisp, smooth, etc you can open stuff from freehand or import .ai (7) files (illustrator format) PS is a bit flaky in importing vectors and reshaping those vectors once imported isa bit of a pain. fw is cheaper! so if you don't need print capabilities (as in cmyk) then fireworks is a much better proposition (though psp is a lot cheaper again ;) everything is the same interface (optimisation, slicing, preview...) in FW masking is easy (just draw a vector object e.g. rectangle and fill it with linear fill group it with object as mask voila. to change the masking properties just move the gradient fill handle) with some presets as well for quick fades. i found the vector drawing in psp a bit clunky but i really haven't used is that much so want to reserve judgement on psp generally for now good workflow (not sure what that means either, but i guess it means that it's easy to do stuff...) of course the best tool is the one that does what you want, how you want and for me that's fireworks! for an example i did this in fw (not finished yet) http://pp.kpnet.fi/prescott/test-area/turntable.htm and this i-pod (http://members.surfeu.fi/dave_pirjo/test-area/i-pod_simple.png) and it was a lot easier (for me) than doing it in PS (of course if your gifted a using PS then it could be as quick)

You guys really went off topic... ;) lilblackgirl doesn't need any bulletproof armors this time. I happen to like your site. I like your rich use of meta tags. That's friendly. I would use CSS instead of e.g. bgcolor and bordercolor attributes, but nevermind. And your doctype is useless... you didn't define the path to any dtd file (I guess you have no idea what I'm talking about). About the screen resolution fuzz. You can't optimize sites which are in wide and critical use for ANY resolution. So please use CSS, if you can't afford to lose any of your viewers. 640x480 is not the smallest resolution. Typical Pocket PC is 240x320. And how can you know what is the resolution for future's web browsers e.g. embedded in your fridge? This is for all of you: Use CSS. Validate it. Regards, Bamse
