There are several that you can download and try out. I would first recommend the "tiny personal firewall" Reports have it as a pretty good system.http://www.tinysoftware.com/pwall.php Free for home use Zone alarm is another that seems to get pretty high reviews.http://www.zonelabs.com/ Black Ice defender while popular, has taken some hits recently as ineffective against web bots. http://www.networkice.com/products/soho_solutions.html All can be found by searching for their names

This is going to be one of the rare occasions when I throw my hat firmly in the ring. The ONLY firewall for the PC that is almost totally leakproof is zonealarm:Very very stable survives some pretty intense probing. It took me 45 second to "break" the tiny personal firewall although admittedly I used a MPP approach - a resource probably not available to the average hacker. More to the point perhaps zonelarm has some very good help and configuration options aimed at DSL users such as yourself. You can get it free from: http://www.downloads.com or from zdnet.com It's free for private use and around 19 USA dollars for business use. ------------------ Hope this helps :-) Gorilla aka Mark Saunders http://www.computerdriving.com Email Address: marksaunders@techie.com ======= "Gotcha!" Thanks guys!I'll take a look at these. It looks like Zone Alarm may have a few bugs in the latest version (... judging by the users' comments), but then what program doesn't, although many people seem to love it. Thanks again for the suggestions ... ginnie

I originally used the free version on Win 98, then when I migrated to 2000 it caused no end of grief, so I tried BlackIce. Whilst I liked it, I liked zonealam better. The latest version now causes (me) no problems via w2k. So its worth the 30 bucks

I highly recommend ZoneAlarm. I've been using ZoneAlarm for almost a year now, and I've never had any problems - both on WinMe and Win2k. I've found it to be very effective and stable. I've also added a DSL/Cable router/firewall. This may be overkill for most, but I had the need for a router. Now, with the combination of the two, I have gotten zero alerts on ZoneAlarm.------------------ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Melissa http://lissa.right-web.com

RE: firewall - 7/17/2001 14:33:00
Thanks everyone! Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the Pro Version ($39.95) and the free version? The free version seems to be the same as the (regular) $19.95 version that's required for commercial use. The reason I'm wondering is because I'm running Windows 98 and have seen some comments about problems running the free/$19.95 version on Win98. Thanks! ginnie [This message has been edited by ginnie (edited 07-17-2001).]

Not a huge differnence - I've run both and installed it for many non-commercial users as well. the pro version does seem to be a bit more stable but I've honestly never had problems with either. 'Nor *personally* know anyone who has. Me I'd reckon the extra twent USA dollars is worth it for the extra peace of mind but then that's me ------------------ Hope this helps :-) Gorilla aka Mark Saunders http://www.computerdriving.com Email Address: marksaunders@techie.com ======= "Gotcha!" I have run the freebie version of Zonealarm for about a year on win98se now, picking up the new vesions as they are released.I have never had any problems with stabillity while using this, and neither have any of those i recommend it to. (who run it on various win flavours) My only gripe, and it's a minor one, is when you ask for more info on a firewall alert, it opens the info page in the same browser session you had open. It would be nicer if it opened a new window, or at least gave a choice. PS, if you want to check on your security, take a look at www.grc.com and try the tests there.
