Times New Roman - 3/22/2004 20:14:37
I got a request from a client today to change their text from Arial to Times New Roman. May I say ? They were quite happy with it, but I was having a problem accepting it. Along comes a great googled article from Mezzoblue: http://www.mezzoblue.com/archives/2003/07/24/times_new_ro/ Thanks to the line height and letter spacing in CSS the client is happy and now I'm happy too. :) Linda

I like it for titles, but entire paragraphs of it look hopelessly old fashioned, even with the extra leading and padding and stuff. I really like it as an all lowercase italic title....looks very elegant.

I took a class in technical writing many years ago. They quoted a study that Times was the most "readable" font in use. It has something to do with conditioning and the abundance of the Times font in our early reading experiences. In other words we are trained to read Times. Personally, I like Lucida Handwriting, <sigh>why does fontography on the web have to suck so much</sigh>

Well yes, serif fonts promote ease of reading because the tails (serifs ) do lead the eye onwards. But that is a print based view. On screen TNR does look hopelessly old fashioned, but more than that because it is a print based font it really doesn't render too well in pixels. I tend to steer people towards Verdana as a substitute. It was designed for the screen and IMHO is the best for sustained screen reading. I too studied printing history, but firmly believe that it's the medium that should determine the font used. Verdana also prints well and is in most people's systems. Cheers Carol
