Giomanach -> Last Revamp (3/23/2004 3:45:27)

Yes, I've revamped it again. This time it's the last time, because I've finally found a design I like. Now for you lot to rip it to pieces, just the home page, and all dead links (well internal sites ones, the external site links work)

Here

Please excuse the address, my other host is down.

Fire Away

Cheers

Dan

jaybee -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 4:43:15)

OK, rather like it, simple, clean. (Bet you get fed up with it in 18 months or less and change it again [;)])

Home page..... drop the content down, the quote is too close to the top bar leaving a big white gap at the bottom.

Tutorials...... check your spelling, I'd drop that down a bit too unless you are intending to add more text.

Why does Lori's site only appear as a link on the home page? Has she upset you? [;)]

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 4:47:22)

Haven't finished the rest of the pages yet, b'cos you should notice that there's Linux and Mac missing from the other pages as well in the Upcoming sections bit

d a v e -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 5:34:38)

some (left) padding in the left nav div would be good so that it lines up with the big G in Giomanach header

Peppergal -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 7:46:18)

Very attractive (my favorite - greens! :-)

I'd like to see that darker gradient at the bottom of your left div go all the way across the bottom - looks like it was interrupted, in my opinion.

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 7:53:23)

Well, I'm just scrubbing up the main pages (top nav links) then I'm going to upload them.

Karen - I don't have Fireworks here, but when I get home tonight, I'll open up the PNG again, and see what I can do, just a thin line or a nice fat juicy one?

LoriL1212 -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:04:27)

Dan,

What I see here looks ok - what is it for? The green looks familiar as does the quote and logo style, LOL! Will you be using this look in conjunction with the other?

Do you want what is here incorporated?

Do you want navigation from this one put in as well?

It will be up in about an hour ;)

Let me know on those so I can put in if need be............

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:08:26)

Isn't this the Q for everyone but me an you to go huh?

As a sub folder entitled Support, I'll be putting a link to it in the links section

Oh goody, shouldn't be long before I can fork out the money for it too[:D]

Only if you want to, but get the rest sorted first, then we'll discuss the holiday....oops....i meant where to go from here[:D]

<edit>
No Typos this time, but Lori, you might be able to help me here, infact I'm sure you can:

The drop down boxes I'm using for mav in the Tutorials, Guides, Windows, MS Office and Downloads section are using JavaScript for an onClick action, here's what one looks like:

<option value="Utilities" onClick="location. href='downloads/utilities.htm'">Utilities</option>

Works in everything but IE, why? and how does one fix this?

Cheers
</edit>

<edit2>
What was that about typos??? Defo can't type today

It is not MY site sillyhead! It is yours, so do you want it or not, ROFL!

quote:

So you do not need a "support" option in the design?

quote:

Oh goody, shouldn't be long before I can fork out the money for it too[:D]

$$$, for what?

quote:

Only if you want to, but get the rest sorted first, then we'll discuss the holiday....oops....i meant where to go from tere[:D]

It is all sorted, LOL, but if I am to add things, I want to add them prior to cut. You with me.

... should this:

onClick="location. href='downloads/utilities.htm'

not be this:

onClick="location.href='downloads/utilities.htm'

Nobody's asked[:D]

quote:

You've twisted my arm, go on then, but hold on till I've uploaded the page content etc, I'll have to add the extra pages later

So you do not need a "support" option in the design?

Whatever is easiest for you

$$$, for what?

The hosting

Yup, gimme a few mins and I'll have the rest of the main pages for this uploaded, then all I have to do it alter the current pages to suit the design of the new one, but they can be added later.

quote:

... should this:

onClick="location. href='downloads/utilities.htm'

not be this:

onClick="location.href='downloads/utilities.htm'

Your most likely right, but I've never had problems with doing it my way before???

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:33:04)

Here it is. Just gotta redo all the sub pages and stuff. But I'll be able to upload them myself, won't I?

BTW the JavaScript thingymuhbob didn't change at all

Peppergal -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:34:51)

I'd have it be the same as what's at the bottom of the left div now.

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:36:42)

OK, there you go Lori[:D], don't ya just love being me?

Okay, I'm lost.[8|]

LoriL1212 -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:39:08)

I will remake the quote that you have there to include it, as the shadows are cut off on the bottom and right.

Yes, you will be able to upload, update and such yourself.

BamseIsUnix -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:40:08)

That's a good site. It's very clean, the contrast is good and you don't use any tables for layout. The only thing I might suggest is that maybe you really should add some margins there. But this is a site I might add to my "good sites" list.

This is a page that'll definitely works with every single browser out there. Good!

Oh, and you have don't have a starting body tag. I guess it'll still validate, because that's actually not very huge problem. Please fix it (at least I don't see it in my K-Meleon source view).

Regards,
Bamse

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:41:57)

Ok Karen, I shall explain, first one to sort of ask[:D]

Me and Lori are seeting up my own Web Design Biz, and all the constructive waffle that has just taken place is all to do with getting as many sites as I can into the given amount of space. Glimangia is staying separate as thats totlly different, just getting the domain and site sorted now, courtesy (for now) of Lori, with me throwing my nose in here and there[8D]
I am the king of typos

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:43:05)

Oops, bamse is right, I:

MISSED A BIT[:D]

LoriL1212 -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:45:16)

quote:

you don't use any tables for layout.

By the way Dan, since this was pointed out, I hope you know that I "DO" utilize tables - and LOTS of them. That is the way I do my work, always have - and it works for me.

You can change whatever after I am done.

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:46:51)

Tables or not, I have come to conclusion:

As long as it looks good, who cares?

Edit: I'm taking a breather from typing, can't type today, coffee break

LoriL1212 -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 8:50:48)

Well good then - that what I think too - if it looks great AND works, then perfect.

Oh, and Karen, if you were interested in seeing what we are talking about, it is on my site [;)]

Peppergal -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 9:26:23)

As I live and breathe.... LOL

Lori - that is beautiful. I love the top banner (and the colors). I really like the "hands" concept.

LoriL1212 -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 9:33:26)

Thanks Karen,

He needed something, and I know how hard it is to sit down and do something for yourself when you are a developer... it is always "clients clients clients" - LOL.

So, this was my gift to him to help get him off to a good start [;)]

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 9:36:09)

And you refuse to take money for it, only thing I'm allowed to fork out for is the hosting. won't even take it as a gift, no fair, oh well, just goes to show, you're just as stubborn as me[:D]. Well, we will sort somehting out so I don't feel as guilty for taking it all for granted

<eidt>
Lori

PM or email me the details, I've gotta sign off for the rest of the afternoon, I have work experience kids in, and they've been dumped on me, I have filing to do, and I can't delegate the workload on this one, so I'm letting him play aorund onthe Internet till I get back[:D]

He's knows what not to touch, so if there's posts from me, it's not me (makes sense, I think not)

</edit>

LoriL1212 -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 9:37:20)

By the way, Dan, it is cut and coded now.
You can go back and see what it looks like.
The links are not all in yet.

I OFFERED. That is the bottom line. You did not ask for something for free from me. I told you I WANTED to make you something [;)]

The way I see it:

The more you do --- the better you get at it ---- who cares about the $$$

[;)]

Giomanach -> RE: Last Revamp (3/23/2004 11:35:18)

I hope when I have kids they don't work as hard as this lot lol, they're making me look bad!!!

It's looking good. And remember (forgotten how many times I've said this now) there's no rush, you have other clients to get sorted as well[:)]. I'm off tomorrow (woohoo), so I'll catch up with you on Thursday, if not before then, anyhow, time to go hoooommmmee[:D]

gorilla -> RE: Last Revamp (3/24/2004 2:11:57)

Much better. You need to spell check it it detracts from an otherwise very prosfessional looking site. You need to reword some of the things that sound like special pleading for example:

quote:

All the downloads in the downloads section are freeware, I do not host any of the downloads, but if there are any broken links, let me know, and I'll investigate to get it sorted.

quote:

All tutorials are based upon the programs I have and use. They are also my methods, and I only touch on the basics. You are required to haev JavaScript enabled to access the tutorials.

"haev" btw is past genitive form and therefore excellent Danish. It is pronounce like the englsih word "hay" but with a glottal stop. The rest of it is very bad Danish indeed. Faktisk er det imponerende dårligt dansk.[8D]

"You are required" is passive voice, always try to use active voice. As you have worded it is can also be read as damned arrogant sounding. You risk p*ssing off visitors.

quote:

Unfortunatley I don't currently support Window 2003, because I have not used it yet, but as soon as I have, I'll create the area for it.

not good speeeeeeeling :-) Sounds like making excuses also.

This sort of thing detracts greatly. Tell people what you can do fro them now not what you cannot do or what you might be able to do in the future.

Beg borrow or steal a copy of "The Economist Style Guide." Also as you are on this side of the Atlantic to use Amercian spellings is wrong.

Note cursor position in screenshot. You need to shift your text to the right a little. It is too cramped now. Colours are very good btw. My congratulations to you and to loril who has done her usual elegantly professional job assuming it was she who chose the gradient and did the quote for you.

That just brought more points. What you accomplish by using tables, you achieve the same result with CSS more easily. It was decades ago when HTML tables where invented, and they were meant to display tabular data. There was no such thing as "layout". HTML wasn't even meant to be used in such a world changing communication method as the World Wide Web. So what now? What happens to web development? Are we all doomed? :O

That's why the WWW inventor Tim Berners-Lee (http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee) and couple of others founded World Wide Web Consortium. It was based on the idea to Lead the Web to it's Full Potential... by giving out specifications and recommendations on web techniques. And if they tell me to use CSS, I gotta use CSS, and HTML only for the page structure.

But as I said, he (Giomanach) only earned a few more points.

funny i thought that's exactly what is WAS for. at least that's what he says in his book "Weaving the World Wide Web"

Tables may have been meant to display tabluar data, and i agree that css is a better method *most* of the time, but i think it's still valid to use tables for layout, and they are valid html. Maybe when browsers (i mean explorer particularly) become fully compliant then css will be a more robust method of layout, but until then i think that tables are still a valid way and you shouldn't be so fascist in your css outlook.

there are far more important things to concentrate on like coding valid mark-up and employing good usability and accessibility practices than pointing the finger at table-users.

let those those that want to use tables for now until they make the transition to full css do so in peace, and be there to support them when they need help making the move when they are ready.
