Nancy Nelson -> Windows 2000 & PWS/IIS (7/24/2001 13:23:00)

I have this wonderful speedy new desktop but can't figure out how to get the web server component running. I do know that it's not known as PWS anymore, but as IIS.

When I go into Administrative Tools and choose Internet Services Manager I cannot even get the panel to open. Same goes for Personal Web Manager. I did a search on the Knowledge Base, but didn't really find a relevant article.

Can someone help to step me through this process? I thought maybe my firewall was interfering, so I disabled it, but it didn't help. When I type my http://hostname into the computer, I get a "page cannot be displayed" message.

I don't know what other information to provide other than SP 2 is installed.

Hmm... Weird. I would try removing IIS, and reinstall IIS, and re-apply SP2. As long as you don't have a webs setup now, you won't lose anything, and is a fairly quick process.

I had to do this because I had a problem with Publishing my web. I had installed FP2000 first, and then IIS, and It was giving me problems. So Installed IIS, SP2, and FP in that order. Hope this helps.

Did you install IIS5 when you installed W2K? It doesn't install by default.

Sounds like IIS is not installed?
There is no PWS!

I know there's no PWS for W2K. If IIS isn't installed why would I have the Internet Services Manager and Personal Web Manager and Server Extensions Administrator in my menu under Administrative Tools? Also, if I go to "Services", it shows IIS Admin Service as Started on my local system (but I don't see any icons in my system tray for this stuff). I am logged onto the system as administrator.

I didn't install it personally. I asked the fellow I bought the desktop from to install it. I have subsequently installed FrontPage 2000 (and have since upgraded to 2002). I knew enough to install IIS before FP -- but maybe it's not installed correctly?

If I do as suggested and uninstall and reinstall, can I find this on my Windows 2000 Professional disks?

Sorry, the technical part is really not my strong suit.

Here's what you do to make sure IIS is installed correctly: Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components tab. Check IIS and click on Details and make sure everything is checked. You'll need the win2k pro cd to install. When complete, you should be able to go to Internet Services Manager and see your computer name there, click to expand and you should see "Default Web" (or something like that, I'm working from memory here). You can right click on the web to edit the properties. You should also be able to access your web at http://127.0.0.1 .

If you still have problems, I'd uninstall & reinstall IIS.

Thanks Melissa,

I had already done that and made sure everything was checked. I've currently uninstalled FP and am in the process of uninstalling/reinstalling IIS.

I'll check back in later and let everyone know how it went.

Thanks everybody!

Success with the uninstall/reinstall. It just took a while is all...

Thanks to all who helped. I even have the little icon showing in my tray again.

Gosh, it takes amazingly little to make this girl happy
