Target keyword/static pages - 3/24/2004 10:27:25
Hi, I'm new here so please forgive the lack of knowledge. I have optimized for the keyword phrase "silver jewelry" on one of my pages, which has 36943 searches. The more I read, it seems I should optimize for something like "handmade silver jewelry" which has 1231 searches or should I go for something in between?. Any thoughts are appreciated. _________________ Also, what is your take on making static pages for specific keyword phrases? I have .asp pages and it seems easier for me to create .htm pages and have the pictures I post there to link to the .asp. How many links to the same page would I be allowed on the new page before it looked like spam to the SE if at all?

Why not create a new page for the second term? I would create pages for each term slowly getting more and more targeted. I used to run a jewelry site. I had over 300 "phrases" that I came in on the first page of SERPs for. My motto is throw a large net. On ASP VS. static I've had great luck with both. I wold heavily recommend using ASP generated pages from a DB over static pages (More so if you sell products. It will save a lot of administration time). Take care, Brian

Thanks for the info, Brian. When you optimized for the 300 phrases, how many pages did it take for you to do this? I only have so many .asp pages. That's one reason I wanted to create the static pages.

When I optimize a page it is usually for one phrase or a single keyword PER PAGE. It helps in the ranking puzzle this way. If you target too many phrases on one page or use the same ones on every page you do it will dilute your results. Fast overview on how I view keywords/phrases. I view my site as a pyramid with the index page being the "point". I then have a second tier of pages. These link to a third tier of pages, etc.. Now I start with a VERY generic keyword for the "point" page. Each tier/level gets more refined or targeted on keywords/phrases. By the time I get to the bottom tier or what I call my "money" pages I have very targeted traffic. This is what I call "throwing a big net". However keep im mind this is only ONE element of SEO/SEM that makes up the big picture. Pages don't NEED to be ASP based (read dynamic). It just makes it easier when updating on your site. Me, I like to edit only two or three pages (being dynamic this changes every DB generated page) VS. 300 static pages. I also have gotten good results in Google/MSn/Yahoo/AOL on ASP query pages (read dynamically generated pages). HTH, Brian
