if it was an external page, the links would NOT be updated. oibviously what do you mean by an external page? one not in the site? on on another site with only an absolute url or what? why not download dreamweaver and try it for yourself the people you asked have obviously never used DW or if they have they haven't got a clue what they are talking about.
