[Developer Tool] FireFox 0.8 Install Help for Developers - 3/24/2004 19:47:14
Some more info about Mozilla in general can be found in c1sissy's post here

For about 8 months now I have been using Mozilla. Before it was FireBird, now it is FireFox that I use. The first day I started using it I just thought I died and went to heaven. I went through an entire day without ONE CRASH. I can't remember the last time I did that in Internet Explorer.

I have made four of my friends install FireBird (Now named FireFox) in addition to their IE browser.

Some people are rather skeptical about installing these types of programs just because they don't want to install something that they either do not understand, or believe they do not need.

Don't say that you do not need Mozilla FireFox 0.8 until you install it, and play around with it for a few hours.

Give it a chance, because every person I have given it to have said that it is better than IE, and they will never go back.

Note: Those who have a mouse that has a scroll wheel between the two left/right mouse click buttons, if you click on a link using the scroll wheel, you will open a link inside of a new 'Tab'. Let’s say that you just visited Outfront and you notice that there are 3 new posts in Advanced Web Development, and of course you want to check them out. All you do is click the three links using the scroll wheel, and it will open all of the links in a new tab. Then you can click in the tab when you want to view it, and close the tab by click on the tab (on the top) with the scroll wheel button, OR, click on the red X in the right towards the top. Not the X that is in the very top-right corner, but the one below that which is Red.

Below is what a Developer would want to use for their FireFox browser. Trust me, you will love this when you are finished.

Installing FireFox 0.8
First off, you will need to download & run Mozilla FireFox 0.8 setup. (Download the file and double click it, or open it after the download completes in order to install it).

Remember folks, this program is not something as integrated with Windows as Internet Explorer is. Meaning, you can easily un-install FireFox if you do not like it.

After you install FireFox, you will need to install two plug-ins (Mozilla calls them extensions).

Installing Extensions: Web Developer
The first extensions is named Web Developer.
quote:

Adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools. Current tools include converting form POSTs to GETs, hiding images, outlining block level elements, disabling styles and many more.

- This is something EVERY developer will love. You can view your web site while changing many different aspects of it. I really like the View Source, Validation, and Disable styles functions. You can go to a page, and view the page without the CSS! All, of course, with a click of a button.

Installation: To install this extension, simply open FireFox, and copy/paste this URL inside the address bar. http://downloads.mozdev.org/webdeveloper/webdeveloper.xpi .xpi files are extensions associated with FireFox only.

Make sure you do this inside of FireFox. What will happen is FireFox's awesome download manager, will actually manage the download. After it is complete, it will ask you if you wish to install it. Click 'Yes' to install it. Then you will need to close the browser, and open it back up again to see the extension working. You will notice a simple little menu below the links on the top. Trust me folks, this is awesome!

Installing Extensions: All-in-One Gestures
The second extension that I use almost every day, is the All-in-One Gestures
quote:

This extension includes mouse gestures with customization, rocker navigation, tab and history scrolling, and auto scrolling similar to that in IE, all in a single package.

- Basically, I use this for navigation purposes. Lets say I want to go back a page, I simply hold the right mouse button down, and move it to the left, and release. That is how you move back. All of these gestures are configured inside the Extensions Manager found in Tools>Options>Extensions>All-in-One Gestures>Options. You can open a new window, reload the page, and so much more that people usually do every day.

Installation: To install this extension, simply open FireFox, and copy/paste this URL inside the address bar. http://perso.wanadoo.fr/marc.boullet/ext/allinonegestlatest.xpi .xpi files are extensions associated with FireFox only.

Make sure you do this inside of FireFox. What will happen is FireFox's awesome download manager, will actually manage the download. After it is complete, it will ask you if you wish to install it. Click 'Yes' to install it. Then you will need to close the browser, and open it back up again to see the extension working. You will notice a red line when you hold down the right-click button on the mouse, and move it around. You will be able to configure the options for the gestures by going to the Extensions Manager found in Tools>Options>Extensions>All-in-One Gestures>Options.

Thanks for pointing me to the webdeveloper extension it certainly looks a time saver.

The other tool I really find useful is the Install Manager for extensions, but what I find really irritating is that I have twice lost all my bookmarks, apart from the imported IE Favorites.

Why does that happen? I have now installed the extension that backs them up on closing all the time, but even so this is quite a glitch.

Looking in the Firefox support forum, it seems that I am not the only one to be affected.

Otherwise, I love it. I hate having to use IE for my banks' site with a passion now, though!

Cheers
Carol

I've not had that problem. I've had crashes with certain websites but that stopped after I updated my Nvidia drivers (why, no idea).

Some sites have submission forms that don't work with FF so I keep IE6 in reserve for those.

And there's the dreaded, mp3s won't play through it but that's MS Media Players fault and I've got that one sorted now.

Other wise it's a great browser and much more secure than IE6.
