Domain Name??? - 7/25/2001 19:00:00
Hi as I stated before.. If you remember.. I am trying to setup my home webserver. Well I got most of that portion done and over with.

Thanks to Gil...

But now I am trying to find out how to register the domain name that will direct to my computer.

It will need the DNS Server address. How do I find out what will be my DNS Server?

Is that where my ISP come in? Will they be the one that supply me with the primary DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server?

Thanks a whole bunch,

rurbaniak

Are you hosting a site on your computer, that will be accessed from the web? Or is it hosted at your ISP? Your question has thrown me for a loop.

Are you getting the IP from your ISP? Then you will need to talk them into supply the DNS and the Secondary DNS entries. Most IPS's won't do this - good luck.

BTW, I had a client who wanted to host his site on his own server - his ISP charged him 19.95/month for the DNS direction. He could have paid for hosting on a DS3 for that

Check http://domains.yahoo.com $35 per year and it works great.

Yes, I am trying to host a site on my computer. Since I will be using DSL and I want to make a good use out of it.

I am suppose to get an IP from my ISP(Verizon), I think. I have to double check with them again.

Which has nothing to do with what Xtreme2000 was asking.

Xtreme2000, did you get an answer from your ISP?

Gil is right.

VERY few if ANY ISP's will allow you to host your own site over a DSL or Cable connection.

They usually exclude that specifically in your service contract and some actively police their networks looking for people running their own servers....

The IP you are getting from Verizon will most probably just be your DSL router's IP and not intended for a server port address.

I hope not... That will be too bad.. That I can't get it...

It will make me sad it they wont let me do it. I might just use the dynamic webpage redirect then. But I rather not do that... Too much trouble for that...

But who know if I want it bad enough, I probably just do the redirect. oh well...

Thanks everyone...

W2K Pro.. For now. I have W2K Pro and W2K ADV Server. But I dont know how to set up W2K ADV Server correctly, yet. So I am just holding it back for now until I have to redo my system again ( I do that ever so often..Make the system run good.) And a good practice for me...

Hm, Pro is the "workstation" not a "server". I am not sure what kind of results you'll get.

Just like running a Web server on Win95/98. Same concept. I had the Website running fine when I direct it to my local http address (http://127.0.0.1/ or http://computername/) just like that. And it work perfectly for me.

Yes I did. According to the guy I spoke to. He said that residencial accounts have Dynamic IP address ( So I wont be able to run a web server with a fix IP address.) But if I sign up for bussiness account I will be able to use static IP address.. and they will provide me with the primary DNS and secondary DNS servers name... (Now this is according to the guy I talk to..)

Well not quite - IIS didn't run on 95/98 And, a "workstation" is not a server, even if it does have IIS bundled with it.

Normally a workstation will only have a IDE HD, SCSI is needed for a server - IDE is way to slow.

In my experience a Win server (IIS4 or IIS5) with any less than 512 RAM is sluggish and prone to crashes. A workstation (W2K Pro) is going to be evne more so.

A lot of the tools that are a part of "server" are not in W2K Pro and are needed to maintain/administer a "server".

Just wondering - Is the difference between the normal account and the business account less than the $14.95 - $19.95 you could get a "SERVER" account with dailey back-up, DS3 (or more) Bandwidth, Halon Fire Protection, 24/7 monitoring, etc. ?

Here's a list of the limitations of Win2K Pro as opposed to server.
http://www.iisfaq.com/Articles/302/
Which amongst others is the limit of 10 simultaneous connections. 2K Pro is just for testing I guess.

Oh well... Then I have to redo my computer then. But I am going to wait until I need to. Since home DSL dont support Static IP address anyway.. Thanks for the info.. I will probably have to find other ways to get myself a home website without limitation on what I can do... In the meanwhile happy hunting...

I guess I don't understand what you are trying to do that the yahoo domains service does not do. I am hosting a site from my home pc using the yahoo service to point to ip address of my linksys cable/dsl router which is connected to a cable modem using the @home cable service. In the control panel for my router I just point port 80 traffic to the internal ip of my home pc.
domain name = msrweb.net
website redirect = www.msrweb.net

I should add that even if I was sneaky and tried to use this website for some commercial purpose it would be impractical since my @home service is assymmetrical, the upload speed is only I think 64kbps. Killer download speed though. I'm not complaining.

Well, I was trying to setup my computer to have a fixed IP address (That my ISP suppose to provided, But they wont since it is not a bussiness type account) And register it with a DOMAIN NAME.. So I can have my site at home, without having someone elses host it for me with a limitation to this or that (IE: 20 Meg space, or Cannot run CGI scripts. Cannot upload this type or that type of files)... It is a pain in the butt trying to find someone to host it for me.

I want to be able to do what at want with the site. NOT having them tell me I cant do it.. If you got my drift...
