RE: How to set priority - 3/27/2004 18:25:27
I commented out the embedded style sheet, after altering the code slightly. So of course it doesn't "work" and nobody unless they have a truly weird and hitherto unknown bug in their browser sees properly commented out code. And before anyone gets nitpicky :-) yes I'm well aware of the various comment hacks. Please note that I said "properly" I do not regard deliberatley triggering software bugs as coming under the heading of properly.
LIL make sure that you have the order correct in all your code. I didn't bother to correct it above:
link visited hover focus active
You already had code that was close to working so you didn't actually need another class. You could I think usefully spend a little bit of time boning up on the cascade order and on how inheritance works. Otherwise you'll waste a lot of time when issues like this arise. There's also a significant difference between how somebody with only a hazy grasp of the theory works with css and those with a good basic grounding in it work with it. I invariably find that those who put in a little effort to get a basic grounding come up with sites that have some sparkle and (look good in anything.)
I know I suggested that you create a separate class btw but there were two reasons for that:
1. I hadn't had a chance to take a complete look at all of your code. 2. I suspected that creating a separate style would be a quick fix for the problem. This is how I write and debug css code. Once it works I cut it and transfer it to the linked stylesheet. Saves a lot of time and alt+tab ing
As a general point however (see comments above about getting a grounding) there's a tendency to over code. Its always a good idea to see if you can make one set of code as robust and multifunctional as possible. Otherwise you can wind up coming back to something and wondering which of 15 separate link classes you need to update and why on earth you did that way to start off with. I have heard this called "classitis."
Mind you this is a case of "do as I say not do as I do."
I wonder who owned the hatsnack ............
