A real estate agent sent me three pictures to put on the website, that she took at 300 dpi resolution. (ech).

I tried resizing them in PSP to 70 dpi, but it didn't change the file size when compressed. These are relatively small pictures, (about 300 x 200 pixels) and when optimized they will have a file size of around 27,000 bytes - at least 10,000 more than it should be in my opinion. When I look at the image information, it does say 70 dpi, but the size seems too big for me. ...it seems like it SAYS that they're 70 dpi but they're really still 300 dpi.

Does that make sense?

Have you run them through the optimiser? File>Export>JPG/GIF/PNG optimser.

That normally knocks a bit off the file size. If that doesn't work, download the trial of Fireworks and import the image, then export it. All The Import and Export functions are done through the FIle Menu with Fireworks

I say get the Fireworks trial because you can set a target file size. Are they JPG? GIF? or PNG?

I got it down to 14KB, without loss of quality

they're jpgs. I'll look into the fireworks.

That's what I figured it should be...no more than 17kb.

I used PSP7, you need to set the compression ratio etc. But still get Fireworks, it's easier to set it than PSP, well at least I find it is anyway

Okay, I'm lost. I used the JPG exporter, setting the compression to about 17.

But YOU recompressed an already compressed photo, though...so that would explain it . ....

Best I could do was at 14K also. Used three different programs, setting compression ratio to about 70 on each

I compressed it at 30 and got a similar file size as you. But there is some loss of clarity. However, in this context, it's no big deal. the picture isn't that great to begin with.

But in the past, I've usually compressed no more than 20. I read somewhere that the max you should compress for clarity is 20-25. I still think that a compressed 300x225 photo at 70 dpi shouldn't be 27,000 bytes...but maybe I'm just ignorant here.

HA!!! So that's it!! So if I did mine THREE times, then it would have given the same result as you. LOL

Well, I'm gonna have to give this lady a lesson on photos for the web. Unless she also wants prints of these...I dunno. 300 dpi is just silly.

I ran a compression of 15 and then one of 20, works fine. Can I have my sweeties now?[:D][8D]

Actually, let me say that one of the first things I would do to the photo (which will help with the size) is to crop around it --- get rid of the road and some of the top so as the focus is on the house [;)]

I am not sure what is wrong with your PSP exporter, but maybe you are just missing a step in there... look over this page again (not that you don't already know how), and maybe you will see something you are skipping:

BTW Lori - I have downloaded trial version of PS7 (is that the one you use?), any ideas where I can get a cheap serial number or whatever for it, I'm not paying $609 just for that

Dan. look on eBay. You can purchase legit copies on there. That's where I got my PSP8 for $40 less than retail. Someone won it in a raffle and didn't want it. It was brand new unopened in the original box. Photoshop 5.0, brand new unregistered for $30. I'll bet once you get that on your computer you could qualify for an upgrade.

I'm actually tempted to buy photoshop 5 myself.

Lori - is Photoshop 5 inferior to the newer versions...meaning, would it be a waste to get it? (are the newer versions just more bells and whistles? for instance, I'd have no qualms about encouraging someone to use PSP7, though I think PSP8 is laid out more sensibly)

I'm not willing to spend big $$$$$$ on something just to mess around with at this point in time, though if I get v5 and like it I may be inclined to upgrade when my next website job comes in.

Just bought Photoshop 7 off of Ebay UK, didn't go for the cheapest one, I'm always wary of thise, but I've just forked out £20 for Photoshop 7 and serial, doesy bugger was daft enough to post contact details[:D]. You won't find it anymore, it's disappeared, I should have it within a week or two, provided the scttish mail service is working[&:]

WOW, that sounds like a good deal, though I don't know what that is in US dollars. Bidding over here on v.7 is $150 and up..

Well, I would not buy it.... there are 3 versions past that (6, 7 and CS) so it just does not have the ability to do several things that the others do (well it does, but not as easily).

The lowest I would go would be version 6.
