Advice please - Tired of Tables - Ready for CSS - 3/29/2004 10:30:10
Greetings,

I am one of the poor unfortunate souls who have been clinging to tables for far too long. I have been reading through tutorials, samples, and the many outfront forums (which are really great btw!) and it is time for me to brave the world of css.

I would like to ask for critiques on my site, so that I may take them into consideration before I begin setting up my stylesheet.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to your suggestions. urlgurl.

Thank you so much, any advice would be such a help. Yes the site is the one in my profile. Sorry about that! After I made the original posting I realized that I had not made any mention of the url, and quickly made a second posting to include it.

You should never come near the css forum confessing you're a tableaholic. Gorilla will have you on the programme before you can say div. :)

Site looks reasonably straight forward for conversion and your pages will come down in size by around 75% by the look of it, but how much time have you got?

It takes a while to get rid of all the old formatting and then getting it to render the same way in css. I know, I'm trying to Gorilla proof a load of tables at the moment. :) Don't try it if you're in a hurry.

Your footer on the home page could either do with being centered or all shoved to the left, at the moment it's half and half.

The logo at the top - text is fuzzy and I would make it larger so it stands out a bit more, that's just my preference though.

Announcements and Wedding Websites are both the same. Either have just one or change something. Nothing more irritating than clicking on something only to find you've just seen it.

I'd do something about the Just imagine your very own..... logo. It's too pale. Make it stand out.

Other than that, which is really just cosmetic stuff, I like it. It's very..... weddingy.

Jaybee - You english astounds me "weddingy" lol:):)

Urlgirl - Click Here

The only tables used are for the content, the rest is all div layers. I'm having to tweak the CSS file to get it to display right in all browsers but otherwise, it looks good in the big 4 (IE, Mozilla [well Firefox], NN and Opera). I also removed all the excess coding that FP produces. Dropping the file size from 20.5kb to 9.5k. Loads fast?

I've altered the colours slightly, and changed the links. Only problem I am having is the links at the bottom of the page and the copyright info. They show in everything but IE??? Where's M when you need him?

I've kept your meta tags the same, the links are all active with reference to your current domain.

Do you run the company as well as maintain the website? If so, I can revamp the whole site for you, leaving you to concentrate on the business side of it all. I have also tried to optimise the images, they wouldn't go any lower without loss of quality.

Whaddaya think? If you want the colours changing, let me know and I'll change them

Dan

I've always been a big believer in..... if there isn't a word for it...... make one up.

What is it with men and pink? I like the pink. It's weddingy. :)

Dan, I think the content in the main section is now too close to the borders. It needs to come down and in.

I don't like PINK!!!! lol, think of it as a toned down colour, it's easier on the eyes too.

As for the content, there's no pleasing some is there?:):)

Sorry but it looks squished. There's acres of space available so I just think it would look better with a bigger margin. Just get on with it man and do as you're told :):)

"Naorthumberland Brider" ? some strange darlington dialect? or just the alt tag for the logo ;)

you have no character encoding on that page and some validation errors, but i guess you know that!

I like pink, well at least for wedding sites, but i also like the colour you have there as well.

Dave

No-ones perfect, c'mon, it's not bad for a notepad job, it 10 mins I might add too. But I must admit there are some things you will find in Darlo, that you won't find anywhere else in the country, me not included:)

I'll put the character set in later, for now I have to get some work done, even though there isn't that much to do

Ummmmm, sorry no, it still looks too strung out. Take a look at urlgurl's original and you'll see that it's a lot more compact.

Think it's down to your menu being a lot smaller than hers.

Just a brief comment regarding the site content, I think the black and white images are a bit poor and detract from the image you are trying to present. In particular I would loose the picture of what I assume to be a champagne flute at a 45 degree angle - it's not obvious what it is, when I first saw it I thought it was an artificial insemination device. It may be because the fluid level in the glass is also at an angle so it looks unnatural. At least straighten the shot and pan out so that you see the base of the glass and it's obvious that it is a glass.

RE: Advice please - Tired of Tables - Ready for CSS - 3/30/2004 8:17:30
I would like to thank everyone for the advice given so far! I am overwhelmed (read in really positive way) by the comments and the forum overall. I have browsed through a few posting boards that were full of flaming comments and that did not have very many constructive critisim postings. I am so very pleased to have found the OutFront community.

Giomanach, I can't believe how fast the page opened for me, and that you took the time to do up the page! I am afraid that I am partial to pink. It is a very "weddingy" (I think this is a great word Jaybee) colour which is part of the appeal to Brides.

I will be working my way through the comments, and take into consideration all of your suggestions. Thanks again, urlgurl

No, I won't ask. No, I won't..... oh alright then..... how do you know what one of those looks like? :)

Dan, no sorry still not right, better, but the menu seems to make the difference. The original pushes the top content further over. It has a certain "je ne sais quoi".

Urlgurl you stick with pink dear. A thought occurs though. Given that blokey types don't go a bundle on pink and neither do they go a bundle on icky wedding sites unless us girls force them, have you thought about doing a "Here comes the groom" site?

You could fill it with blokey stuff like shoes, suits, speeches and how to carry the bride without dropping her. And you could use Dan's ummmmmmm dark pink. :)

Nooooow she says where you can use it, I only went and changed the stylesheet lol, now worries, I still know the HexDec colour for it.

I'll change the menu width later, also means I'll have to increase fotn sizes to, but apart from that, is it ok?

Note to self: Never do this again, well mebbe once more:)

Jaybee - here comes the goom. That is very interesting. Grooms in Canada need to be led by the ear to take part in anything "weddingy."

This would open a new market as well. Not only the blokey stuff, such as not dropping her, but other articles on how not to ruin the most important day of her life! Just imagine - a secret source of information for the groom. Instead of running in terror from his wedding obssessed bride, he could learn things such as sending his stressed and weary bride-to-be to a spa for the afternoon, leaving him completely free from flowers and linen samples to go to the pub - and most importantly - still be the hero of suggestion.

hmm. . .
