SMTP :: Testing E-mail locally - 8/2/2001 14:38:00
I'm running Windows 2000 Professional with FrontPage 2002. This is the first time I'm trying to verify that a feedback form with e-mail is working correctly.I'm receiving the following error message: Error #160005 message: Bad response from SMTP host 'smtp.telusplanet.net': 550 sender address is missing a domain. I've looked through the e-mail properties for my local host as well as the SMTP properties. I don't know what I've missed. Any ideas? I have it running OK on my laptop with NT Workstation 4 and FrontPage 2000. ------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks>

Hmm... I haven't done this setup, but usally if there's a problem with my SMTP, the first thing I try is Telnet to Port 25 to make sure its running.

I can get my telnet running, but I'm not sure what command to use. Can you let me know? I thought that maybe my ZoneAlarm was getting in the way (I was getting an error that MS FP could not accept a TCP Port 2881 connection from IP because Internet Servers are blocked), so I disabled it, but it didn't seem to matter.------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks> [This message has been edited by Nancy Nelson (edited 08-02-2001).]

Well, if your running 95,98,or NT then you goto a Command Prompt and change the Host to your IP, or www.yourname.com, and then change the port to 25. Or in Windows 2000, just type telnet [IP or www.name.com] 25If it works it will say something like SMTP Service Version blah blah blah is Ready. Hope this helps. Keep us updated.

Here's a link to a similar problem I found using Google...http://ag.arizona.edu/hypermail/uaweb/uaweb798-699/0037.html Unfortunately the suggested solution was to use different software. I thought if I posted it here, someone might have different insight...?

Sorry if this seems obvious....You are sure your ISP's SMTP server is called 'smtp.telusplanet.net' and not something like "mail.telusplanet.net" ?? I am not familiar with the error message you are getting, bit on the face of it, it seems that you are missing some information in your setup somewhere OR that is being sent from the form to the SMPT server.... Also what is the e-mail address in the FP form you are testing? Is it a valid address? I appreciate the help, really I do! I know I have to step through all the permutations and combinations. Technical stuff is not my strong suit and once I have something set up the way I like it, I never have to do it again... Anyways, this is what my ISP says on their homepage... <pre>Incoming Mail Server Type: POP3 Incoming Mail Server: pop.telusplanet.net Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.telusplanet.net Incoming Mail Server Type: IMAP Incoming Mail Server: imap.telusplanet.net Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.telusplanet.net </pre> and this is what I have entered in my settings... Web server mail address: imap.telusplanet.net Contact address: (my email@telusplanet.net) SMTP mail server: smtp.telusplanet.net Other settings as default. Should I be changing one of these? ------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks>

Aaaaa...OK! Try this... Web server mail address:something@telusplanet.net Contact address: (my_email@telusplanet.net) SMTP mail server: smtp.telusplanet.net Other settings as default. Web server mail address:...This needs to be a syntax valid e-mail address and NOT a server address. For example myserver@telusplanet.net should be fine here.... Hope this helps! Rian
