Okay, let me have it - 3/30/2004 17:26:17
We have our corporation papers drawn up, the insurance and bond is pending, our inventory and office is in place. Should be hitting the ground running by the middle of April.

Now all we need is for you to take a look at the site and let me know what I can do to improve it.

I've gotten page load times down pretty low on all but one page, (and that one's only 20 seconds on a 56K), figured out my "images won't show sometimes problem" and I think we're about to let people know it's there.

Any suggestions? Anyone? Anyone? Thank you Simone. :)

Man, Mike you were quick. As soon as I posted it I realized I left it out. It's there now.

Nice site. My only problem is that I have no idea what your credentials are in the profession of photography. On your "Who We Are" page it's nice to know that Steve is going to use the money that I pay you to put in a new nursery for the kids, but I got no feeling that the service you offer is of any quality.

Straight forward, easy to navigate and gets the message across. Just a couple of things. The images on the service area page need to be cleaned up there's a lot of noise in them. I'd like to see some samples of the packages, images of the furnishings, computers, etc. and maybe some examples of tips too. Not enough to give away the store mind you.:) Lastly, at 1024 x 768 you banner eats up about 40% of my screen (I'm not sure about the content scrolling over it either but thats just me).:)

On the whole though :) I like it!

<edit> remember to check spelling:)</edit>

I'm usually saying.... make the banner bigger. A little smaller would be good. Other wise really nice except it doesn't render too well in Opera.

The "Portfolio" page just isn't up yet. There is plenty of experience shown there. The whole concept of this business is personal service from two people we want our customers to know. Such a unique approach in this day and age.

Couldn't agree more, Mike. I'm having a heck of a time finding the maps I need. You'd think it would be easy. Eventually I'll find the right one.

Hmmmm. I have Opera 7.2 and it looked great. What version are you viewing with?

Thanks everyone. I'll continue to improve it.

Looks really nice, though grammatically, it needs some help (run ons, fragments, mixed person, etc..):

quote:

First of all, we think you should know that we are Dave Laird and Steve Calhoon. Real live people who care about you and want to work hard for you. We came up with this idea some time back but it was derailed when Steve was called up and had to go to Iraq. Dave kept the idea alive and organized things while Steve was overseas. He's a veteran too and about ready to retire from his career of thirty-plus years. He wanted something so that he could continue to provide a service to people and to keep busy too.
Steve has only been married a few years and wants to start a family so the extra income will help decorate the nursery and provide a few other things when the time comes.

Both Steve and Dave are in public safety communications and Steve is a firefighter so they are keenly aware of what a loss can mean to you and how important it is to be able to substantiate an insurance claim.

Try:

First of all, we would like you to know that Dave Laird and Steve Calhoun are real live people who care about their clients (they can't care about me yet cause they don't even know I exist) and work hard for them.

The idea for this service was borne some time back, but was temporarily derailed when Steve was called to serve our country in Iraq. During the time that Steve was overseas, Dave kept the idea alive and organized things.

Dave, also a veteran, is ready to retire from his thirty-two year career in_______________, but desires to keep himself busy by continuing to help others in providing this service.

Steve, a firefighter, is newly married and is planning on starting a family in the near future.

Because of their experience and work in the line of public safety communications, both Steve and Dave are keenly aware of what a loss can mean mean to you. They realize how important it is to be able to substantiate an insurance claim, and their goal is to help you do just that.

Or, something. LOL

On the front page, you have "Insurance pro's"

there shouldn't be an apostrophe on pros unless you're talking about something that belongs to an insurance pro. I would just use professionals. Looks better.

Hey dave,

Looks fine to me in opera and mozilla.

Vey nice job. Glad you got it sorted. Some quick points:

Either lose the marquee entirely or confine it to the homepage.

On this page:

http://www.shadetreeimaging.com/insurers.htm you say:

quote:

INSURERS

Are you an insurance company with no adjusters in our service area? Need photographs of fire, automobile or storm damage? Personal injury photos? Site photos? Any other photo documentation? Give us a call. We will promptly address your needs to help you process your claims. Just check for numbers on the CONTACT page.

Nope. If you can't be bothered to give me the number there and then I can't be bothered to click to find out.

On this page:

<living_dangerously>
http://www.shadetreeimaging.com/who.htm I managed to work out that the guy with the camera is steve. Ummmm who's the escaped Orang Utan with the laptop?:)
</living_dangerously>

Your H1s need to be aligned with the text.

In general the language veers between formal and informal which may be an offput.

I'll do a detailed critique tonight when I get the time.

OK, I sat there waiting on my little 56k modem speed as the electrons sped from the US to the Outback thinking ....uh oh, Dave has messed the code up.

Then all of the sudden, pow! the tree jumped out at me.............and what a terrific image it is with the suns rays etc!!!

I had a play and thought similar thoughts to others, like banner too big & could I get away with reusing the same underwear tomorrow, etc etc.

While playing, that image really grew more & more on me, especially the way the page scrolls up, making the banner size obsolete anyways and the semi transparent edge makes a great touch.

Then I remembered some prophetic words.....
quote:

Ummmm who's the escaped Orang Utan with the laptop?

and that old bastard in the photo started looking familiar.

The business concept is brilliant (it is always being pushed on TV......photograph your belongings for insurance)

I reckon, stick with it & break with the norm.............you are on to a winner on all fronts.

Dave, in looking at your site in more depth (I really like it ; I love the colors!!!) I think it could benefit from a more thorough "once over" in the grammar department. I'll try to look at it for you tonight or tomorrow.

Great idea, and you've inspired me to do this myself for our own belongings. My dad lost a lot of stuff in a fire a few years ago and I've been thinking of making a list of everything but it's downright daunting. Doing it digital makes a lot of sense and I can do it a chunk at a time. This will also come in handy when we move...in case something gets damaged or lost in transit, right? Don't think you'd want to travel to PA for a $250 job, now would ya? LOL

Sorry Karen,

You'll have to wait a bit. I've booked him. We ship out in a few days and we want him to take photogrpahs of of all our shiney equipment and of course our shiney selves in case something happens to it like people thowing rotten bananas or something.

I'm doing a lingo revamp too - LOL the poor man will be spoilt for choice.

Now Dave, d'ya see ya miserable wretch ya, what being helpful and popular on outfront does? You get people (and gorillas) lining up to have a bash at your copy writing!

</wag_finger_warningly>

PS: Why on earth do you think Jaybee is using opera6? It has to be the buggiest version of opera around.

What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment, I figure if it works in Opera 6 it'll work in anything.

Except maybe IE6 :)

You'd be advised to install opera 7.23. Which you can do as a side by side install and keep 6. The rendering is a bit different. If you're optimising for op6 among others you may get a small shock or two in how op7 does it.

LOL. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I admit I get a little defensive at criticisms about the banner--it's what turned me on to the template when I saw it.
The other suggestions for improvement are solid and I'll work them in.

Keep it coming, Karen. I wanted a "homey" site (Dave n' Steve, Steve's service in Iraq, etc etc.) but I'm sure I overdid it. I'll incorporate your ideas and your grammar suggestions.

Gorilla, the guy with the laptop is a paid professional model. He cost us a fortune for that thirty-minute photo shoot. (You believe me, don't you? :))

Garry, thank you. I "tested" that template on dozens of people before I even started and everyone liked it. It fits the company name well.

Ellipisces, the photos not showing up was traced back to a bit of code in the CSS and the template designer showed my how to correct it. I haven't checked it all on a Mac--I better do that.

It still will require a lot of work. I hope you are correct about the concept. We think we have a winner and the guy at the Chamber of Commerce who works with us thinks so too. We are one of only a handful of similar companies in the U.S.

Gorilla, our service area is rather limited but we might be able to work out a deal. :)

Thanks everyone. If you see anything else, let me know.

Dave

INSURERS TEXT:

This was the page I was least happy with. I punched it up a bit, to play a bit more to your streghts. The email instruction text is a translation of my standard Danish text which gets passed trhrough an emacs routine to shove in the required bits for me. So adjust to suit. You can see and download the text file by clicking on the attachment link. More later

This I think is a little more free flowing. Also it is important to reassure and give confidence from the very beginning. So perhaps this text.

PACKAGES:

I think that text is ok as it is. BUT right at the start of the page you need to do a paragraph saying that you offer a range of packages including a "help protect your loved ones in care" package.

Again remember to emphasise that you're a team of bonded insured professionals with real life experience under your belts.

Note about the text files: I'm reasonably sure the spelling is correct and reasonably sure that I've done it using Amercian usage. But no harm to check, spelling and usage are differnt on this side of the Atlantic and on the laptop I'm using I haven't bothered to install any English language spelling or grammar tools.

They're just bog standard text. No mark up so downloading 'em from here and importing the text shouldn't give any grief. I've kept a copy and its a few days before I go so email me if any problems and I'll send 'em to you as an attachment.

While I think of it I looked using IE, Opera, Mozilla, the transparency doesn't work in Opera. it is solid. This doesn't detract from the design and there's nothing you can do about it anyway.

Navigation: - You need to put the link to the home page right at the top. People expect it so give 'em what they're used to seeing.

Hope all of this helps a bit dave, good luck with it, I think you're both onto a winner. Question is your fee tax deductible? Find out, and if it is put that info in. Also some insurance companies over here give discounts on premiums to customers who:

1. Fit approved locks etc.

2. Give the company documentary proof of what they're insuring. You might like to check this.

(And yes I believe you :) )

Rather than using CSS to define transparency (each browser has its own code which might change in future versions requiring retrospective code tweaking, and Opera ignores the issue!) you can use semi-transparent background images which work in all browsers. Download a variety of colours here, plus she teaches you how to make your own: http://www.wannabegirl.org/translucent/
