PSP making me crazy - 3/30/2004 17:56:16
Hello,
I am trying so hard to learn PSP and am struggling. Have bought the dummies book, tried the on-line tutorials. I am about to give up. Does anyone have any suggestions for trying to learn this program - or can you recommend an easier program to do really simple things like the header of this forum (fade photos into a block of color etc., resize logos)?

Thanks for any input.

Don't give up.:)
Keep trying things if you're unsuccesful ask some questions here. There may be a few people that help.:) Hint: instead of trying to "fade" the photos into a block of color create a "gradient" block of color and work your photos into/onto it.

You might also want to try the Paint Shop Pro users group: www.pspug.org This is solely dedicated to Paint Shop Pro users.

There are quite a few users here who can probably help you as well.

One trick to "fading" pictures into something is to heavily feather your selections. When you "select" something, have feathering set to at least 20 - that will fade the edges of the selection considerably and will make blending easier. Depending on the picture and the effect I want, I sometimes have a LOT more feathering, 30+.

You could put the picture on line that you're working with, send us a link, and tell us what you're trying to accomplish with it. There are quite a few folks here who take great pleasure in helping folks out.

Start with learning layers.

Once you grasp the layers, and can work with objects independently, you'll be well on your way to mastering the program.

Start here with your questions. If we don't know the specific answer, I'm sure we can at least send you off in the right direction to find it.

so tell us what part you're having the most trouble with. Have you used a graphics program before - which one? This well help us know your background and where to start with helping you.

Best way to learn any program, I've found, is mess about with it, until you get it right. But as Nancy has said, what, if any, graphics programs have you used in the past?

Thanks for all the good info. I really have not used a graphics program except Publisher which I don't think qualifies. Do you all use PSP for resizing logos for web applications without losing quality? I am constantly debating between spending multiple more hours learning this or subcontracting these sorts of things. Seems silly if you can use PSP for this.

I myself use several programs for logos, resizing, compression etc. I have PSP7, Fireworks MX 2004 and Photoshop 7.0.1 (trial at the mo) Illustrator 10 (trial). Using all four of them allows me to create decent quality graphics at low file sizes.

Publisher is a DTP program, far from being a Graphics program these days. I would have said PSP is a good place to start on learning graphics programs, but thats all based on opinion.

To help you with your personal debate:

Spending the time to learn the programs will, in the end, prove useful to you, incase you "adopt" a web site with graphics and all. Outsourcing it can become expensive in the long run, but if you get the right company, they will offer discounted rates for constant and regular orders

I'll have to admit that all these graphics programs are daunting when you didnt get in at version 3 or 4.

Stick with it & practice on a few tutorials

I've used PSP for everything I do. I cannot afford Photoshop, and unless someone gives me a darn good incentive to buy it I won't be spending $600+ when PSP does what I want.

The first week or two that I spent on PSP I was hopelessly lost. But with the help of a friend experienced with it, and the PSP users group tutorials, and another PSP tutorial database I found...I fell in love with PSP.

Thanks for the motivation. I took your advice bought yet another book and am slowly making progress. At least I was able to mask something today. Thanks again!

Check out Pinoy7. They have some great tutorials and an awesome bulletin board. I learned a lot of stuff from that site.
