Favicon Question - 3/31/2004 12:33:56
Hello. The site I am working on is a subweb. I have made a favicon and placed it in the root directory of the subweb, but the main web's favicon shows up instead.

How can I make the subweb's favicon appear?

Here's the weird part. Another subweb I have from the same main web show's it's proper favicon.

Main Web: www.westcler.org
Subweb with correct favicon: www.westcler.org/gm
Subweb with incorrect favicon: www.westcler.org/ce

I'm not getting favicons with any of them in IE6 but I'm getting all of them in NN7.

The last one is the red one, same as the first.

Never tried one in a subweb. You might have to specify the correct favicon on a page-by-page basis. Is there anything at www.favicon.com that helps you?

Try adding the following to the page, in the <head> section:

<link rel="favicon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/icon">

NOTE: Favicons will not work, unless they are in the main directory of the index.html file, and they also not work, unless they are called favicon.ico

I also see mixed results - :)
IE 6 has never displayed the favicon, but
Netscape 7, Mozilla 1.7, and firefox 0.9.1 do show it.
I use both:
<link rel="favicon" href="server/.../favicon.ico" type="image/icon">
and
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="server/.../favicon.ico" icon type="image/icon">

of course, most viewers are using IE, so solving that one would be good . . .

ok - works in IE 6 now:
- deleted existing bookmark(s)
- cleared temp files
- first saved url as a favorite (required for IE 6)
- if you don't see the icon on the bookmark or in the browser address bar, move your mouse around the default icon in the address bar (weird, but it works - see: http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/4366-2-10.htm)
- once the icon shows up, you can save the URL to your links toolbar, and you will see the icon there.
