Microsoft Acquires Yahoo!, Google in Blockbuster Search... - 4/1/2004 8:51:33
Has anyone heard about this yet? source:The SQL Server Worldwide User's Group SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (SNews) - April 1, 2004 - Steve Ballmer today announced the proposed acquisition of search giant Google and Internet services leader Yahoo! in a surprisingly bold bid to own the search and Internet services spaces. The deals, valued collectively at more than $75B will be a combined cash and stock swap deal. Google co-founder Larry Page said on Monday that he was excited to be done with the gossip about a possible IPO and glad to be continuing to innovate and bring new pigeon-techniques to bear on the search space without the distraction of an IPO. "We've really enjoyed the public support for an IPO, but at this time, working closely in the Microsoft/Yahoo!/Google team is just too tempting. With the combined efforts of this team, you'll see technologies never imagined when it comes to search technologies, ad serving technologies and information flow-control." Yahoo! CEO Terry Semel indicated that market consolidation was a good thing, saying that "...with the emphasis on providing services directly to the desktop, Yahoo!'s services offerings fit well into the Microsoft model. We think by combining the resources and technologies we can collectively provide an unstoppable force in the search space. After our recent acquisitions of Inktomi and Overture, we truly can centralize, under a single company banner, the resources and capabilities that drive the Internet." More information, including plans to fully integrate the search capabilities of the engines into Longhorn, Microsoft's upcoming operating system, were to follow, with Steve Ballmer indicating that "soon, your workstation will know, before you do, what you need to search for... and it will have the results waiting!" Additional details were expected to be released as the deal was prepared for presentation to shareholders later this week.
