Just need a second eye... - 4/2/2004 8:54:53
I have just completed development on these two sites, and just wanted to see if you all would look over for any spelling errors or broken links. Anything else is welcome as well (except "use CSS", as most know my stand on that :) )

Thanks all :)

* SYSTEM DATA RESOURCE
This one is a redesign of http://www.sdry2k.com
The url I would like you check is http://www.systemdataresource.com

* BLUE INK WRITING
Just wrapped this one up this morning. I know that the form is not going to a pretty page, but I am waiting on a response from the clients host to fix that - - other then that, thoughts??

http://www.blueinkwriting.com

........ again, thanks a bunch!

Hiya Lori

Here I go:

System Data

I can't see any typos etc but I have been looking at a screen all day and my eyes are tired. Overall, very nice, clean, and readable. A hell of a lot better than the original, only thing I can poke at it the DHTNL menu at the top, when hovering over the links, the background makes the text a little difficult to read, either that or my eyes are tired:)

Blue Ink

No fair, can't pick at that one, I just don't like the colour scheme, but I cant do anything about that, b'cos it suits the site:)

I'm fairly biased though, I've been watching these develop for a while:):)

Hows that for ya?

Dan

Dan,

Should I make the hovers a bit lighter ya think on the drop downs...

Anyone else think so?

**edit to add: Dan, you could not have been watching Blue Ink really unless you have been at the site in the last 4 days.... I just got that job on Monday nite - and am proudly already done with it :)

Very nice, both of them.

Is this your "Pastels period"?

I can see what Dan means about some of the paler text. It's OK on this monitor but I'll check it out on my TFT at home later. If it's going to wash out, it will on there.

Lori

Just the background needs making lighter, or the text darker.

The Ssytem Data one I've watched for a while, the Blue Ink, I was looking at the logo choices for a while, and have looked at the site development since tuesday

It's long enought o be a while for me:)

Ahhh, okay Dan - then you are up to speed with ZC :)

Jaybee - no, actually - the SDR is the same color scheme as before.

The blue ink were his choices (you can ask Gio as he watched the logo develop) - I had several different ideas, but he liked the blues.

With that, I find that people that have me do sites for them, most of them, love my site, and want IT. When I tell them that they can't have it, LOL, they say, well can I have the same colors - or close to them... LOL!

**edited to add: If you go to my site, and look in the current projects you will see The Imagination of Giomanach (still coding this one, don't know who the guy is that owns it tho, LOL :) ) and and ExposedSkincare - neither of those are pastels....

BUT ---- I do like pastels for the net.... very clean, crisp and corporate :)

system data looks great. (i just spent 10 mintues critiquing and finding problems with the original just to realize that it was the old copy :)) outstanding job on that. only comment i would have is on blue ink on the writing page is the section titles look like links b/c they are underlined like the links below them. Mabe bold face them instead or move them up a font size. just an idea. great work lori, i wish i had your talent.

added: Oh, and was your active link on blue ink supposed to be that large a font?

Thanks alot - I appreciate your kind words...

... Yes, I know of those headings - I am going to sneak in a quick change and maybe the client will like it.
He like them this way - but maybe he will like that better...

... off to make a quick change :)

Well I wanted your website too! In fact

psssst (keep it quiet) but I've got the home page printed off and pinned on my noticeboard for inspiration.

As for that other persons site. I think it would look really nice in pale pink.

Yep! All fine, the only things that are a bit washed out is where it says writing under the BLUE INK logos. Otherwise, great.

system data reasource - excellent!
dropdowns are need a little more contrast - either darker text or white text on darker background - not too much but just enough to lend a bit more contrast.
on the symbol logo (frontpage) there's a stray red pixel top left

re: blue ink again very nice BUT you need to tighten up your link styles - the background on hover behind
Our Writing | Who We Write For | Recommendations | Who We Are | Writing Store
looks muddy and the underline doesn't work ever so well with it
how about on hover using the pale blue thta's in thw "writing" header near the top as the background colour? and then use the same scheme for the 3 main categories as well,

OR forget the underlines and use the middle 'blue' from the center block in the logo (same as the colour of the 'ink' in blueink big logo)

don't forget your doctype

also link order should always be
link
visited
hover
active

(gorilla posted alink somwhere about 'focus' as well)

possibly some increased leading (line-height) might improve the body text try something like
line-height: 1.5
and see whether the extra space the text takes up is to your liking

also (!) you will be better of using <strong> and <em> to replace bold and italic as they are deprecated and are (usually) displayed the same. you also probably don't need to set an explicit font size for bold/strong either as it will take the size from whatever element it is applied to

also... i realise you probably wanted that particualr font for the headings but i wonder if it wouldn't just be better as css styled text with the appropriate <H> tag? then it will scale nicely and be indexed by search engines

you certainly have got a signature style and it's very nice (jealous)

RE: Just need a second eye... - 4/4/2004 5:29:10
Thanks Dave -

SDR
- Hover link color darkened
- Symbol pixel fixed (see that is why I need a second set of eyes :) )

BLUE INK
- changed the hover on both navs. Now no underline, blue shade and 1px pad all around - however, now they jump around too much for my liking - let me know what you think.
- doctype there now (I have not yet optimized the site, and that is when I usually add that code)
- updated css link order
- added line height attribute to all .p's in stylesheet (thanks, does look much better that way)
- all <b>'s now <strong> with no font size; all <i>'s now <em>'s
- all .headers are now <H?>

Thanks for the critique and the compliment :)

RE: Just need a second eye... - 4/4/2004 6:13:17
looks better! if you put the same padding on all the link states for text1 then it won't jump!
also you can use shorthand if you want, so for
padding-top: 1px;

	padding-right: 1px;

	padding-bottom: 1px;

	padding-left: 1px

you can simply put

padding:1px;

also if you want as well you can wrap all those links (Our Writing | Who We Write For etc) in a div and then just apply the class to the div rather than to each link

personally i still find the hover background colour a bit dull did you try it with the same light lilac as the Writing i.e. #D8D4F0 (or there abouts as i'm not in set to millions of screen colours at the mo')

system data resource looks even better with the new dropdown colours
