hot spots - 4/3/2004 17:22:39
i made a navigation bar that i want to use so visitors can click on the words and be brought to different parts of the page, i havent been able to find out how, is there a way? Thank you

Is the navigation bar you made in the form of a picture I.E .jpg or .gif or somthing

Click on the graphic and on the image toolbar click on the Big letter A - but the easiest way to find out is by going to Help and type in Hotspot.

I have gone to the help and there is nothing about linking to different places on the same page as the nave bar, it only tells you how to link to other pages or other places on the web. I made the bar in PS6,

ok the only way to do it with a picture i.e. .gif is to split the picture down and then link each one you cannot link the text in the picture its impossible the only way is like i say to split the picture into sections and then link it.
For example say you have made a bar with HOME, ABOUT US, PROFILE, LINKS you would need to open your bar in your graphics program and crop each one out so its separate i.e. crop HOME out and save them as individual images then link each one.
But remember when croping when you have croped a pice and saved it in a diferant name to your origianl bar click on edit and on undo crop this will bring you back to your original bar and is all you need do is move the crop box over this ensures you dont overwrite your original work

I have FrontPage 2000 and it allows you to create hotspots. Did they do away with this in future versions? I can do exactly what you are asking about in 2000.
I first select the picture and then the picture toolbar becomes active. There are 3 buttons relating to hotspots: rectangular, circular, and polygonal. I simply choose the one I want and "draw" it over the part of the picture I want to create as a link.
It appears that this outfront website has been able to use hotspots. The links in the upper left corner are made from hotspots. Where it say's "OutFront Home OutFront Forums...Contact" is all ONE picture. The links to each section is from a rectangular hot spot.
If this has been omitted in future versions, then it's a shame.

Okey Zoom, I think what you're trying to do is link to a Bookmark so,
First create the bookmark - giving it a name
Then, create the hotspot (NOT A TEXT BOX)
Then, you link the hotspot to the bookmark.
More help? Type this into your FP help "add a hotspot to a graphic" - it's an underused resource.

hold on, i inserted the nav bar into fp and made the book marks. they work in fp but theydont work on the web, either in explorer or aol. i left it in there so you could see it , www.atveffects.com

do you realise that the pictures on that one page are nearly 2megs?! why not
a) optimise them
b) split your site up into sections and spread then over several pages
there are no hotspots or bookmarks (internal anchors) in your code on that page. have you uploaded it since you put the bookmarks and hotspots in?

some of the pictures are *way* bigger than they should be e.g. piaa.jpg is 338KB and 1600x1200 px. when it only needs to be width="136" height="99" resize it in photoshop first (don't forget to use some unsharp mask after resizing, and you might need to resize in a couple of stages if you lose too much detail in one go)
then use image ready (the icon at the bottom of the tool menu) check help if you're not sure about how to do this - look for optimising for web or something similar. use the preview to find the best compromise between quality and file size, possibly somewhere around the medium setting then go a bit further up or down.
also your first three pictures take up most/all of the screen, you could make them a wee bit smaller, maybe put "light up your quad" next to the ATV logo and pop your carbon navbar underneath them.
I think that generally sites are better with a white background , but this is one site would be particulalry suited to a black one, to show off your lights!

it's called an image map and it can be done easily in Frontpage.
it is not exactly a "standard way of creating navigation, yet it still has it's place in the internet (like maps!)...

I resized all of the photos in PS. thanks for the tip, ill also change the background, i used to have a grey background, i thought the white would be cleaner, i have a new logo so im going to change that, it is smaller than having the separate ones.

ellipisces.... an image map wont work. it would only let me link to outside the page. i am looking to have the bar link to places lower down on the page. the bookmarking per daves help is the right idea, but it isn't working, any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dave, black was not bad but i would have to change all of the backgrounds and i was having problems with that it PS, i think it was because of the way i originally made them, ill play with the colors again later, i would have to make new divider bars. anyway , i really need to get the problem solved of why the bookmarking isnt working and the spacing is difficult to do in FP. in the normal mode i have the nav bar all of the way on the top of the page just to get it to appear where it is now. the tables are bigger than they appear in FP. what is the best way to set the size and spacing of the tables, and grafics so that how they look in FP is how they look on the web. www.atveffects.com

if you look at http://members.surfeu.fi/dave_pirjo/test-area/atv/hotspots.htm then you'll see how the hotspots on the image map work - you can copy and paste the code from the nav bar and paste the code into your page (in code view) then make sure you have the targets named the same (the destination on the page e.g. Stop fx like i have in my code
i've put comments in so if you view source you can see where the map is

Ok, this is getting really frustrating, i re-did the hotspots and in preview normal mode they work, they now acutally work in explorer but when you click on the words you are taken to the wrong spots. www.atveffects.com.

my Frontpage doesn't show the bookmark position in preview correctly. It does work properly on the web though....

zoom you need to check in code view that they are in the right place; for example light fx target comes after the title
take this <a name="lightfx"></a> and put it right before your lightfx heading, then check the others

lookin good Zoom!
now my question is: can I get some of those lighted bolts and things and pop them in my computer? All they have for us now is the dumb lights you stick inside and fans with lights. I think the best mod would be one of those "HAL" eyes from 2001. Seems like it's every day that my computer says to me, "I'm sorry Dave, I just can't do that"

Zoom, no offense but do you really need 3 or four different font? Also, will all those fonts be available on the client machine?
May I suggest you stick to the Verdana, Arial, TNR set. I just think it would be more readable.
