Godaddy sells their registrant information to junk mailers. I have one domain registered with them--it's one of those quirky ideas that will come to fruition some day, but at this point has never been used for anything. I am receiving postal mail to that domain name at my home address. They might be cheap, but that's because they make money off your pesonal informtion.

When you register a domain it is in the whois databases. Anyone can find it there

Richard Dudley -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (4/5/2004 11:47:39)

Illegal to mine those, now. And, doesn't happen with any other registrar I use.

smcfarland -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (4/5/2004 12:18:53)

It's illegal to spam, too. Go figure.

I have over 50 domains names with them (25 are mine personally) and I have never had a problem.

Domain name registration information legally has to be available to the public. Since domain name registration information is available to the public, anyone can access it through "whois" searches. The Whois database is a publicly accessible database that lists the domain name and contact information of each registrant. The domain name registration you provide is hosted by us to the public. At times our customers may have been included within searches of the whois database. However, the spam they receive does not in any way come from Go Daddy Software.
Go Daddy Software is a licensee of the TRUSTe Privacy Program. If you have questions or concerns regarding this statement, you should first contact Go Daddy Software at godaddy@godaddy.com or call (480) 505-8800. If you do not receive acknowledgment of your inquiry or your inquiry has not been satisfactorily addressed, you should then contact TRUSTe. TRUSTe will then serve as a liaison with the Web site to resolve your concerns.

Maybe you opted in? Pity... All this time I thought they did so well because they offered a great ordering and maintenance process (which is leaps and bounds better than the others out there for novice users), great products, even better prices and topped it off with a little bit of great customer support (without an 800 number sucking up their profits).

AMysticWeb -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (4/5/2004 15:43:24)

I have @ 10 with godaddy and never had a problem.

I have however had a problem with other registrars sending me snail mail bills regarding renewal of my expiring domain.

I actually had to remind myself a couple of times that they wern't my registrar in the first place.

Personally, I wish I had discovered GoDaddy a couple of years sooner.

Richard Dudley -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (4/5/2004 18:14:29)

>Maybe you opted in?

Nope--I read those things pretty carefully for the opt-in/opt-out gotcha. The mail isn't coming from them. It's coming from places like American Express. Sine this is the one and only place you'll find any record of that domain name, it had to come from them somehow.

I'm intrigued now. I think I'll register some more domains with other registrars and see what shows up in my mailbox.

jaybee -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (4/6/2004 6:13:01)

Nice try but they only issue to US residents.

I was also unable to tell whether it's a full certificate or chained. It just goes on about a sister company holding the root.

spamurai -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/4/2004 19:58:37)

It's their own SSL product. Starfield Technologies is a "sister company" that seems to be where all the programs they come up with are owned. It's all the same godaddy though. Bob Parsons is behind it all either way.

Godaddy doesn't sell your information either. They have been a member of truste.org for a long time, and their provacy policy specifically says "We will never give any information about you to others without your express permission." If I were a spammer and I was going to try to mine a WHOIS server for new domains registered... I would probably start with the registrar who gets the most new domain registrations.... That's been godaddy for a while now.

I've had good luck with my godaddy services in the past... might as well try their SSL too. :)

smcfarland -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/4/2004 20:07:47)

I will have to update -- I used their hosting + SSL for two sites and they were up, running and indexed in Google (not that google has anything to so with the other two) within 24 hours. THEY ARE FAST!!

These aren't e-mail spammers. I'm getting postal mail from American Express, Nextel, and other companies such as those to the domain I registered. Again, this domain has never been used in any context.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/4/2004 22:42:12)

Do you have any proof to back up your speculation about Godaddy?

To be honest, CompleteSSL are the ones trusted by not only a lot of browsers (same as the hundered dollar ones), but they are less than $50/year.

Richard Dudley -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/5/2004 10:17:01)

I'll save the mail for you. I should get more in the next couple of days.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/5/2004 11:08:53)

Oh I don't doubt that you do not have spam at all. I just wanted to know if you can prove it was from GoDaddy....

I had an account with IPowerWeb a llooonnnggg time ago. The first day I signed up, I got two spam messages inside my e-mail. Was this because of IPW? Could be, but most likely not. What I did before I jumped to the conclusion is made a new e-mail account, waited the same period, and then looked and saw I received 1 spam message.

Richard Dudley -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/5/2004 19:40:50)

Let me reiterate. This is POSTAL mail. Not e-mail. Physical, had to buy a bulk mail permit, stuff an envelope, give to Cliffy type of mail. From American Express, Nextel, et al. Addressed directly to a domain name that has never been used in any context save for the registration. No hosting, no communications, no reply cards, nothing.

smcfarland -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/5/2004 19:45:51)

Hmmm, I have that with two domains... one bought via Tucows reseller and the other through GoDaddy. Just started in the past year though. Only one with Tucows, and 25 listed with GoDaddy.

What do you do with it?? I called one or two and said something to the effect of "don't know where you are getting my info from, but this is a website for pictures of my kids for out of state family and you are wasting your money" and the mail has drastically stopped.

Richard Dudley -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (5/6/2004 21:05:59)

Where do you think the address information came from?

I just throw the mail out. The fact that I'm getting junk mail isn't the issue. It's how that information got on the junk mil list that bothers me.

stl2k -> RE: Godaddy SSL Sale - does this go here? (8/28/2004 12:55:02)

richard,

what is your domain? i wonder if you would let us know so that we can perform a little test. $10 says i can find your personal information on the public web just from your domain. unless you've signed up with a privacy tool, such as godaddy's domains by proxy. if you don't wish to include it, perhaps you should at least look into www.domainsbyproxy.com for your godaddy domains.
