Boy, am I in a pickle! - 4/5/2004 11:32:30
I do work work for a client whose site is hosted by a Mom & Pop operation called Orbitel.com. It appears that Orbitel may have gone out of business - the client's site has been down at least a week and Orbitel has had a "do not disturb" on their phone. The client wants to move the site to a different host. Although the client owns the domain, the technical and admin contacts on the domain registration is Orbitel. What's my first step? I've never moved a site before and I don't know where to begin. Thank you! Carol

What you want to do first is find a host with the same features at a similar price. Once found, discuss the new host with the client, and see what they think. If they say no, look for someone else, if they say yes, read on....... If the client agrees to the new host (T&C as well), you can then transfer the domain from one host to another, this will require some information about the current host etc, but it should be pretty easy. And I can't remember whether you will have to re-publish or re-upload the site to the new host, I think you do, but that can be dealt with when it comes to it. Remember, when looking for the new host, you want the features of the package purchased to be as close or identical to the ones that the currently have/did have. Is that of any use? And no doubt, if I've given wrong info, someone will correct me Dan

All domain registrars have some way of updating the contacts. It often involves signing a document and faxing it with a copy of a driver's license. Each one is different, so you'll have to find that particular registrar's process.

Thanks. I have no confusion about finding a new host and republishing the site. I just don't know how to move the domain. quote:

The domain was registered long before I or my client were involved with the site. I looked it up on Network Solutions, and the only thing I see that looked like it might be a Registrar is this: "Sponsoring Registrar: R34-LROR" The "registrant's" contact info is my client's info, but unfortunately the registrant's email is billing@Orbitel.com - and Orbitel fell off the face of the Earth. Doesn't the current host (Orbitel) have to release the domain to us?

Have you tried the tech support from www.orbitel.com? they are operating, or so it seems. To transfer a domain name go to www.godaddy.com. The transfer section is right smack in the middle of the page. Once you initiate the transfer, a flurry of e-mail confirmations will have to occur. Once the transfer is complete, then you will have an account at godaddy and control of the name. By then you should have your host search done. <plug id=shameless>BTW, if you are a newbie, you should give Outfront Hosting a look, price is a comparable, but you won't be able to beat the service</plug>. Once you have a host, go back to godaddy and set the nameservers to go to the new host, 24-48 and you're back in the game! As far as finding a host with the same features, forget about it. Orbitel offers little or nothing for twice the price. now, is there a backup for the site???

Thank you for the information above. I had gotten that exact info myself. But what piece of that info above tells me who the Registrar is? Would it be "Sponsoring Registrar: R34-LROR"? And once I know that, how does the DNS change take place if I can't communicate with the current host? Thank you all. Sorry to keep going on about this....I'm becoming embarrased about my ignorance! Ellipisces, How do you know Orbitel is operating? I can't get to them by phone, or fax, or email, or online form. I can't even get through to PAY them! Carol
