help with php forum setup - 4/7/2004 18:00:35
I am hosting several webs on 1&1. Looking for others in the same situation for support.

:)

Including CityTown.info, USHospital.info, etc.

Installed new phpBB bulleting board on CityTown.info called CityTown Forum.

The Bulletin board was easy to set up and is Open Source ("Free" you add labor). And 1and1 does not charge extra for the php or the database. Seems to come included in the hosting packages.

Needed to edit some files with WordPad instead of FrontPage. Well not sure how to edit php files in FP so used WordPad.

I have a "test" account at 1&1. I have Frontpage configured to edit PHP, but all it does is open and save the file from the FP interface. I guess thats enough since otherwise I would be doing the ol' change, save, upload, test, repeat, dance. Since Frontpage doesn't update links and such in the PHP pages I usually "include" the PHP page in a Frontpage page.

Wordpad = bad idea, is Word's bratty little brother. USe Notepad, it's a text editor only.

I tried to use notepad at first with the phpBB system.

But the files I want to modify have no carriage returns and what I received was one long line of html & php blur. So I switched to WordPad. Seems to work better there because it adds lines or formats it a bit better.

Was trying to change the overall header and overall footer files in the default template subsilver. That way can customise the look of the BB system as have done on the USHospital.info :)Forum.

Have seen someone else with a modified subsilver at City of Hardeeville South Carolina

The phpBB system is really weird at times. Watch out that you do not accidentally republish any of the forum files to your server or it will destroy the BB:).

When I messed up the BB system a couple of times simply destroyed the database at 1and1.com and created a new one. Easiet solution I have found.

There are a couple of little text editors for opening html code that format the code in pretty colours like Visual Studio does for you. It makes itmuch easier to read than in notepad.

DZSoft have a great PHP editor, but it's shareware. They're at www.dzsoft.com. Also, try SnapFiles for a few good freeware apps. Noteably, MPS PHP Designer. I use 1&1 forwarding, quite cheap to register a domain name from them! Mark

The header and footer files in phpbb2 are tpl files and they'll open quite happily in both notepad and FP2003.

I've just finished modifying some.

In notepad, go to Format/Word Wrap to solve that

Avoid this company.

1and1 have very bad practice. Their service is good, reliable, and it works most of all, but their business practice is disgusting.

There are two main points that outline the problems that 1and1 create.

Firstly, hidden away in the ts&cs is a clause whereby your domain names will be renewed without forewarning or authorisation to charge your account.

Secondly let's say you have paid for hosting in full and in advance. Should you have a completely seperate domain renewed, or some other charge applied, and suffer an unexpected outlay, 1and1 will suspend a service that you have already paid for in full. Ther terms carry a condition that they will take unpaid debts to a debt collection agency, so they will inevitably get back their money.

They have no reason to fail to provide a service for which you have paid.

The Office Of Fair Trading told me that their business practice on this count is illegal.

It is not, at this present time, in their terms and conditions that they may do this.

If it was in their ts&cs it would be considered "Unfair Terms And Conditions".

Avoid this company.
