How much for an IP - 10/3/2001 13:51:00
Since setting up with a dedicated server, things have gone pretty well. Until now that we have used the 10 IP's allocated with the package and find out that for each additional IP it is $30 a year. That sounds a bit steep to me. Does anyone know where I can find out what the real cost of registering IP's are so I am armed when I whinge to my hosting company about this.

Thanks

Vince

Actually, $30 per year is a pretty good price. Take a look at wht the ISP & Hosts pay for them here: http://www.arin.net/regserv/feeschedule.html

Back a few years ago everyone thought there were an infinite number of IPs and so they were cheap, but realizing now that we are getting close to running out has changed that.

Why not go with name based hosting / hostheaders / shared ip where possible Vince?

If you don't have to use SSL for a site, if it doesn't need anonymous ftp and if they don't do ALOT of search engine promotion you can get away with using host headers without a problem. In fact many of the larger ISPs do strictly host headers / shared ip or charge a huge fee (I've seen $30/MONTH!) for a unique IP.

In fact you can setup a site with hostheaders and chances are the client will probably never notice.

Hi Jess,
is it at all possible that you could give me a couple of examples of how to set up using hostheaders and how it works?
My understanding is that it would require having
http://www.mysite.com/MyHostHeader
as the URL, which I guess I am very mistaken about.
Also, does anyone have any pointers to any good resources for FP Extensions administration or books on the subject?

Thanks as always

Vince
