gorilla -> The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/19/2004 19:18:07)

I am preparing to launch a free tutorial and template site.

I would appreciate constructive criticism. It has been critiqued to death already but some more never hurts.

Language Usage: Translated from Danish not yet proofed in English.

Don't bother with taking the stylesheets yet btw - i haven't finished marking 'em up or commenting them wait a week or two and I'll be making the who shebang available freely and easily :-)

Url = www.gorillasguides.com

Sooooo True!
I love it.

I am looking forward to the completion of this as well as your articles that you are writing for outfront.

Thank you Mhaircaish. I greatly appreciate the time and effort that you are putting into this to share with everyone.

Peppergal -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/19/2004 21:40:19)

Nice color scheme, and certainly something I would expect from a Gorilla. this will be a great resource, and I echo c1sissy's thanks for your efforts and dedication.

One little thing I found but you may already know about it. Some text overlapping on the alternative style sheet (I really like that one, BTW) using Mozilla 1.7

Looks very nice. I will be looking forward to the resources you will be displaying on there. [:D]

Very nice job!

Yes, I noticed that as well. Also, the narrative on the title section seems a little on the large side for me. There also seems to be a lot of white space which did lead to a bit of eye strain after a while although I'm not sure how far down the design path you are.

Andy

gorilla -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 10:01:46)

Bobby, Thanks for the nice comments - the object is not only "give" lessons but also ultimately for it turn into a sort of swiss army knife resource.

Not just "copy and paste" either but also a lot of reference material.

So there'll be a huge section on IA for example (when I manage to find the time to translate my books on that and then edit them down to a web friendly size.)

As a general point how frightened are people of mathematics in the English speaking world?

Nordic types tend to like some mathematics used to explain why a browser or whatever does what it does. That may be an "off-put for" some in especially the USA. any thoughts?

Karen thanks, yes I know about that - it actually does it in all resized windows. Part of the reason I put such long H1s in there was to see how it affected people. I've got a couple of solutions but none of 'em are entirely satisfactory.

Andy thanks, yah I agree, about the narrative, I bunged a lot in there as an extreme example. In the real thing there's not so much white space as I keep the content short, - easily managed chunks of information.

One point the page weight is more or less what it will be. How fast did it load and or change for people. Scandinavia is famous for very fast connections, rural America rather less so. (I've done a lot of simplification but I can still "shave" some bytes off I think.)

On my other machine I've got a "newspaper" 3 column layour - unfair question but sight unseen does anybody have a hunch that it might work better?

Mhaircaish

Very nice I look forward to it.

Thanks!

LoriL1212 -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 11:36:12)

I am not surprised in the least that you have offered up a perfect and compliant version of your "basis design" - In fact I much prefer your non graphic look as opposed to the original. Very crisp. I don't think there is any picking to do here.

I think you have done wonderfully with your English - and only found spot, here on your alternative layout that that had a err in the spelling:

"This is an main lesson" ---- This of course should have an "A" rather then "AN" there :)

The links expand on hover and make the text jump around (but I am sure you know that)

I am more then excited for your launch and will be making use of what you have to offer, and then utilizing your approach to this, as you have proved yourself (to me) many times over on this board, that you are a wonderful educator, and a programmer to immulate.

As Deb already knows, the past three weeks of my spare (not much of) time has been in the redevelopment of my Zenful Creations site into full CSS. I can thank the Zen Garden for showing me that all CSS based design does in fact NOT all look the same, and that your options with it are limitless.

With that said, I am am sure that your site will be an adventageous learning point for myself and many more, and I thank you for the time that you put in to such a resource.

Shirley -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 11:37:14)

Looked at it in IE6 and Firebird.
Love the colors and layouts.
Good commenting in your html and css.

Everything displays okay in Firebird but in IE when you mouse over the links on index.html the text gets out of whack.

Looking forward to the completed site.
How do you find the time??

caz -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 13:32:14)

In general I agree with the foregoing comments and I particularly like your screen tips for the acronym explanations. I wish more people would give that kind of help on their sites.

One very good feature is the printer friendly page design, save the time of the reader - always a good thing IMO. When I am using a website/page for training I often prefer to use a print version because I find I absorb the content more easily, maybe because I can curl up by the fire to read! ( Shifting the cats out of the way first [;)])

In particular, this Englander is numerically dyslexic and the eyes tend to glaze over at the mere mention of maths!

I look forward to the finished site and would prefer not to have it in newspaper columns because I tend to skim read that layout, rather than read with full comprehension and retention.

But then, that is just me.

Cheers
Carol

BobbyDouglas -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 15:10:15)

gorila, do you want to put that site on one of my servers in the US? I have a very low serverload at the moment.

lilblackgirl -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 15:32:45)

not a big ximian fan huh?
looks great and i'm excited about the tutorials. i halfway expected to find a banana laying around somewhere. [:D]

and why did you comment out this site in your top links? You can tell me to not ask questions, but sorry buddy, it's gonna happen. We LBGs tend to ask lots of questions.

and do you always reference yourself in the 3rd person? [;)]

gorilla -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 16:29:06)

LOL LBG - Actually I'm a huge ximian fan its a great package, and I've always admired their site. It was quite a challenge to come up with a css only version. Of course as a simian myself I kind of like their name [:D]

Outfront isn't a relevant site to it yet but being born lazy its far easier to run a global search and replace routine to uncomment it than it is to stick it in. Of course all of the standard elements are going to be done using SSI but I was born believing that anything that saves effort and gives equally good results is good because it leaves me free to get on with the interesting stuff.

Note to Shirley: Being a chronic insomniac helps :-)

Note to Bobby Douglass: I may very take you up on that kind offer and I haven't forgotten that little makeover for you either, 'though you've been too poltite to remind me!

You have NO IDEA what you've just let yourself in for!

As you know my late son Uffe was mathematically very gifted. Its not every 8 year old little boy who winds up being given facilities in the Technical University to do his mathematical research (non-linear wave function decay since you ask :-) . )

I miss him dreadfully still and a while ago decided that a fitting memorial to him would be my next project.

I've actually already started on it. I'm writing a complete text with a provisional title of "One Two Three Many!"

(This is a joke he used to make and even typing it, or thinking of it brings his face into my mind and makes me hear him hooting with laughter again. )

To put it another way I'm writing an online book same sort of layout and with an emphasis on it being very printer friendly (and free, gratis, and for nothing of course.)

You've just volunteered to be one of my vict..... oops freudian slip.... you've just kindly offered to read the text once I get that far.

SO THERE!

It'll probably take me about a year to 18 months. So you do have some time in which to find a very secure hiding place. [sm=kiss.gif]

It's amazing how you can go off some people, you know.

I remember a maths teacher "Fisheye", saying to me (in front of the class) that her son could do something better than me... he was 9 - I was 14. Well, no wonder I switched off from then on - but strangely when coming to boolean algebra for text searching, it didn't seem like the dreaded m word. In fact I didn't know what I was doing was algebra, I was just "searching" online databases.

OK. Concorde tour in August but after then... when's the next space probe to the outer reaches of the galaxy? Room for a small one and two feline guerillas?

I am not technically qualified for coding critique, and I'm sure it is top-banana.

the <blonde> input isn't to be picky-picky, it is because I know you have particular interest in being user-friendly for those of us who deal with some visual impairment.

..I am accessing with IE 6 from a lappy

This is one of my favorite color combos..is there a way to smooth the curves in the large font header text?

I see you are already doing a bit of cleanup on text centering bottom section on first page...[:)] There is something with the vertical line and page balance I am trying to figure out how to explain but will let you know. Similar on alternate view, the right vertical of the upper left text box is slightly off from the verticals
separating the links...

this will probably make sense to you in that my brain processes the image "off center" enough to make me see 2 lines ??? (not 3, many!)

Donkey -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/20/2004 19:17:21)

Very interesting site, I look forward to learning a lot from this resource.

It loaded quickly in Firefox, IE and Opera. I like the fluid design which works particularly well at small window sizes. That's an advantage of not using images, but as a personal view I like to see some images on the page, it breaks up the text and makes it easier for the "intellectually challenged" amongst us (like me) to read and understand.

I looked at your source code and style sheets, and I must say that I feel a bit like the 2001 caveman banging his thigh bone on the monolith! I've picked up a few tips so far, but I hope that you eventually are able to add some sort of "idiot's guide" explanation of how you achieved some of this... for instance I couldn't work out how you are controlling the vertical position of your content & footer divs, the only "top"dimensions I could see were for the sidebar and the header links.

As someone who is just starting to understand a bit of css, perhaps I am not as up to speed as your target audience, but I think people at my level would benefit from a tutorial on using cross browser compatible code and the same style sheet for all browsers. My first efforts look brilliant in firefox, not so good in opera and like **** in IE. Your site looks great in all three!

I will follow the progress of your excellent site with great interest.

InfantryWife -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/21/2004 0:22:45)

I sure can't critique it, but I will say it looks very good. I like the colors and the layout.

I think it's awesome that you are so generous in helping everyone learn! All of you are so generous! Thank You!

My question is...do you ever stop?!? Boy, maybe I should start eating bananas, for it might give me the go, go, go! [:D]

I'm excited about your site, and your book! Can't wait!!

gorilla -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/21/2004 13:38:29)

My thanks

Peter, (donkey) yes there will be screenshots. That particular template will be explained in a set of tutorials too but not for a while I'll be starting with very basics and working up. I should perhaps have mentioned that I'll be givng full links to further reading and sidenoting as well.

Also thanks to everyone who pointed out about the links. I actually have that fixed in the "production version" and dragged in earlier code by accident. Talk about missing the obvious [sm=icon_redface.gif]

Patti (prelude) SO THERE? would you mind sharing the memory with me? Uffe was fond of you and had a great sense of fun o no doubt its hilarious. :-)

gorilla -> RE: The gorilla invites comments on his forthcoming site (4/21/2004 16:43:24)

Ah, yes that sounds like Uffe and how he interacted with Thor, who was crazy about him, and Fiachra who was even more so. The jokes would spark back and forwards between them.

FYI Fiachra actually recorded it on a night that Uffe was allowed to sleep over in my room in the hospital a few days after I'd had a chemo treatment. And its true, we did snore in perfect synchonisation, mine sounding something like an angry bear with little gentle whiffling noises coming from him [:)]

Even more FYI reports from the afterlife record that he hasn't changed. All the cherubim are now on valium because he has rewritten the celestial air traffic control system so that no matter what they do they constantly experience near misses. And the almighty has got into the habit of checking the divine throne for whoopy cushions very carefully indeed.
