FictionDB -> Windows XP & PWS?? (10/15/2001 20:27:00)

I just purchased a new computer which came loaded with the new Windows XP Home. It was a great computer until I realized that I couldn't test my website from my own computer. After doing some research on the web, I found out that Microsoft is no longer including a personal web server with their products.

So, the question is: What's the workaround? Is there some 3rd party web server that I need to buy? I have FP95, FP98 and FP2000. Does one of these have the PWS that I can install in some fashion?

I would hate to have to take my shiny new computer back to the store and live on WIndows 98 till the end of time.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Kelly

I believe Win XP (Home) comes with the basic IIS 6.0 (?)

If it's not installed by default you may have to add it from the CD.
PWS will NOT work on Win XP.

After several hours on the phone with Microsoft, I was given the number of a Knowledge Base article with a workaround, Q310090. It involves downloading a Windows NT Options Pak. Unfortunately, none of the install programs will run under XP Home. It looks like the only alternative is to buy the XP Professional Upgrade for $200.

Beware XP Home if you run FP with asp and databases!

Huh??

Look at my original answer..... Like I said, PWS DOES NOT WORK on Win XP

You have to install IIS (Internet Information Services).

Have a look here...

Windows XP Home Edition documentation

"Using the FrontPage Server Extensions 2000"

The Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 are a set of programs that work with Microsoft Internet Information Services to support administering, authoring, and browsing a FrontPage-extended Web site. Users running the FrontPage client can then create and manage professional-looking Web sites, whether they're creating a personal Web page or a corporate Internet or intranet site. FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 gives you, as the administrator, tools for managing site security, organizing your content into subwebs, and checking site usage.

Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 are not installed by default during Windows Setup.

To install Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2000
Open Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
In the Windows Components Wizard, select Internet Information Services.
Note

To open FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
Once installed, the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 will run the next time you restart your server with Internet Information Services enabled.
