Commenting in CSS - 4/20/2004 11:47:16
Please, someone, tell me - what benefit is there to "comment" your CSS other than to make notes to yourself? Is this something I should be doing on my real estate site style sheets? Does it help in search engines? I have no idea.

My style sheets are just basic, simple styles, some of them are just text control only, and when DIVs are being used, it's just the simplest of the simple layouts. So...what's the scoop?

I don't use commenst in CSS, but you have already said the only reason I can think of, to remind yoursefl, or explain to others what a particular part of the coding does

It's for you. So, two years down the line, when you go to do a change you have a fighting chance of figuring out what on earth you wrote 2 years earlier. :)

There is absolutely no benefit whatsoever to be derived from commenting your code or even from organising it in blocks that make some sort of sense to you.

Recent research by gorillic scientists has proved that you humans benefit greatly from massively increased stress levels, as you wonder why on earth you did what did, what it is meant to do, and what the hell it is you're supposed to do next.

Our scientists have also proved conclusively that the human habit of smashing their heads against unyielding surfaces stimulates both thought and, digestion, and promotes marital bliss.

NEVER COMMENT YOUR CODE

lol.
This would be me, wondering what I did, how I did it etc.. I would suggest commenting as jaybee stated. Few years down the line and you need to change smomething, well you know what you were doing.

Also, say someone else took over the site? It would be a nice addition to see comments in the code. html or style sheet. Just my opnion!

Not until recently did i start commenting my code. Jaybee states the reason why i do it. Or if i hand the site over to someone else to manage. For me, it's just a way to be anal and keep things clean and in order.

Gorilla, why do you so adamantly state NEVER COMMENT YOUR CODE? I'm not married and the only way i function is by bashing my head. What other way is there to digest? But seriously, am i missing your humor in ALL CAPS? or are you being serious?

Its just that I have a somewhat dark sense of humour LBG. :) If you read it all again you'll see that I actually believe strongly that you should always comment your code if only as a self preservation measure.

Or....... do what I do.

Comment most of it until you get to that really annoying bit that just won't work right.

Get all engrossed in hacking it until it finally works, then triumphantly save the code, forgetting to comment what you did and why.

Next time you come across a similar problem, grab the previous style sheet and........... WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? :)
