fatlardo -> PWS on Win2000 (4/21/2004 3:35:48)

I cant seem to get PWS to work on any of the Win 2000 machines ive insalled it on. IIS is running and ive managed to get PWS to start, but the homepage doesn't work. Ive tried typing in http:\\localhost\ and the name of the computer, (eg: http:\\mycomp\) and neither of them seem to work.

Also, on a couple of computers ive tried, i cant even get IIS to start. I just get a message saying 'action failed to perform in specified time' or something like that!

HELP!!!

Thats b'cos PWS isn't for Win 2k. Try IIS. Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

Remove PWS, and then click on Windows Components, should be on the left hand side, of the Add/REmove Programs Dialog.

Look for Internet Information Services

Check The Box

Click Next, Insert Win 2k CD

Finish installation. Might involve a restart of the PC,

In your browser go to http://localhost/iisstart.asp to test. If it works copy all HTML/ASP docs to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot and then go to http://localhost/

Jobs Done

It still wont work. Ive tried reinstalling IIS and it still wont start.

http:\\localhost\ still doesnt work on the computers I can get IIS working on even without PWS runnning.

Any ideas?

You DONT need PWS for IIS to work, PWS is for NT, 95, 98 systems only. IIS is for Win 2k and later. You might also want to check to homepages for IIS as well, try creating a dummy page for the follwoing, and put different content on each:

index.html
index.htm
index.asp
default.htm
default.html
default.asp

They are the standard ones. I'll take a look at IIS @ home

Tried that as well, it doesnt work.

My computer isnt on the net, does that make any difference.

Giomanach -> RE: PWS on Win2000 (4/22/2004 4:56:00)

Nope. It looks like you're in for a full re-format, sometimes, it's the only cure

Is the WWW Service running?

Open the IIS console and right click on the computer (name) and click properties. Master properties should indicate WWW Service.

belay that last command!

no need for re-format, or re-install
also PWS will run on w2k, just needs the latest version

If your web server won't connect, then you must trace it down using ping or tracert. It is a connection prob, not software installation

<edit>Oh, and also, what do the server logs say?</edit>

fatlardo -> RE: PWS on Win2000 (4/26/2004 3:30:01)

Is the PWS on the W2K CD new enough?

ellipisces -> RE: PWS on Win2000 (4/27/2004 3:19:59)

PWS should be at version 4, might be 5 (BTW isn't that the one that says PWS and then installs IIS or some such nonsense?)

it will work fine, just make sure you have the TCP/IP network set up correctly

it will only support 1 website (I think)

fatlardo -> RE: PWS on Win2000 (4/27/2004 3:29:33)

The WWW service is selected and it still wont start up. I'm really getting annoyed with this now. Anyone got any ideas short of completely reinstalling W2000!!!!

possible to see a screen shot?

PWS and IIS terminology got pretty close towards the end of PWS,

if not, does the WWW service appear in an "explorer like" console

this will not help. The problem is a connection problem, remember, to use a WWW server you need to have a functioning TCP/IP network. Can you ping the server?

fatlardo -> RE: PWS on Win2000 (4/28/2004 3:26:57)

Im not sure what u mean by pinging the server, if it's the same as pinging the IP address some part (i cant rememer which) is looking at then I can. (in this case the IP address is 127.0.0.1).

Ill give you a screenshot as soon as I can get it.
