I never got a chance to chack the other sites at the time as I have only learned of the outages later.

However this clients site is a little different to the others on the server in that her domain was originally hosted elsewhere and is (excuse my terminology, I really do not understand this stuff) still sort of there in that there are pointers to the new site form the old server, if that makes sense. So, her mail for example is handled by the old server, not the one where the site is. At least I think it is - I know I cannot set up mail at her domain from the currrent server as I would normally be able to do. I really do not understand this stuff.

Anyway, is it possible that some error in this pointing is causing the site to disappear rather than a problem with the server where the site actually is? Or am I being given the run around by the host?

• The DNS for the domain is pointed to two DNS servers (normal)
  1. NS.PIPEX.NET A (Address) 158.43.128.262.
  2. NS.IOL.IE A (Address) 194.125.2.240
• The MX record (mail) is pointed to a totally different DNS server
  1. mail.iol.net Hello [65.113.129.59]
  

This should not be a problem, but....?

Basically what I want to know is this:

Her site is physically on one server - which is not wither of the above. If either of the above had problems would that affect the site? In other words the site could disappear but the hosting company, who say their servers were fine at the time, could be correct?

If the old server is down that could cause the problem.

If you look at the Whois you will see that she is not registered as the billing contact. Interesting eh? It sure is 'cos they charged her something like £250 (almost $300) to register the name and are changing her £150 annually to keep it. It's a cash cow. I tried to explain to her that she was being ripped off but she has been terrified by these people into believing that if she changes dreadful things will happen.

They must have some marketing department.

Basicly, you've got a mess.

She needs to go to the registrar that she registered the domain with and change DNS settings to point to the host that is actually hosting the site. If she really needs to have mail directed to another host, it's better to redirect from the web site host to a mail host.

Yes, if the "old" host (that has pointers to the actual host has a problem the saite will be unavailable, even if the actual server is fine.
