system exception access violation - 4/23/2004 13:47:42
I am running FP 2000. Whenever I update individual pages I get this error. Also I get a lot of files in the vti folder that are never there, do you want to delete type errors. What is the vti folder? At one time I thought this was the issue so I used WS_FTP to delete, but I think that made it worse. If I publish entire web it seems to work better, but this takes along time. Any help?

I've seen that error on Publish in the past...

I would usually see it when I updated one page repeatedly, or if I was uploading a ton of JPEG's. If I waited around for about a half hour it would clear itself up.

If you're on broadband, try turning off your modem for about ten minutes and try again... that always worked for me...

VTI is the name of the company that originally wrote FrontPage... the names of the file folders that FP creates for each web may start with "vti_" because it was never changed when M$ "bought" the program.

I am maintaining a site from the school where I teach, so it is LAN connection. I do updates fairly often, as I am building it piece by piece. I don't think I can disconnect form my terminal. Any other ideas?

Have you tried rebooting?

It may be an issue with either your host server or the network... though I would think it was the web server...

Have you tried using an FTP client instead of Front Page to upload the changes? If you're using FP components like FP-includes or forms this may break the pages... but if it's just HTML, etc. without the "bot" code from the FP stuff it works great.

I use Filezilla ( http://filezilla.sourceforge.net ) for FTP and it's absolutely stellar.

I have re-booted up to 12 times a day for other issues. I have used WS_FTP to load individual pages before, but prefer FrontPage where I can make changes in a variety of pages, and publish only those that have been changed. With WS_FTP I have to remember all the pages that were changed. It's just the PITA (Pain in the ass) factor, that's all.

You may want to contact the server admin and ask them to make sure the FP extensions are installed properly... maybe ask for a server reboot..?

The problem went away for me... it may very well be a FP 2K issue. That's the version I used when it happened.

Of course, I was on Win ME at the time... so any error short of the BSOD was considered acceptable... :)

This may have messed things up. I suggest that you PUBLISH the entire site.

That's a good point...

FTP can cause problems with FP-specific parts of your web.

This is the problem. You need to let it publish at least one time, and don't use FTP for speedy file deletion. The reason is that Frontpage will rebuild it's index if it finds any discrepancies in the Folder/file structure (sync). That may take along time. Also, using FTP, it could be possible to cause the other problem.

thanks for the suggestions. I will try it, although I think I've done it onece or twice already. Should I have the web site deleted by administrators, do it myself, or just publish over top myself?

try this first...

http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-145095/mpage-1/key-web%252Caccess%252Cviolation%252Cerror//tm.htm#145095

the "real" solution seems to be an upgrade to Frontpage, but that may not be feasible or sensible...

is this the public post?

in the meantime I did find this as well

http://www.pixelmill.net/support/fptut_fp2000accesserror.asp

This is all related to the theme problem, but I am getting lost between the two.

I did some reading and noticed that many others had this issue when templates were used. I am very new to Front PAge and was fooling around one day with templates. I didn't like what I saw and tried to turn it off. I think my problem is related to this as I recall it started happening shortly after. How can I remove all mentions of templates from my web?

I am back at school for the fall and am still having the same issues. I am trying to build up my site and am still having the same problems. I also notice that I have deleted some files from my web (student marks) and when I go to publish, it asks me if I want to remove from the root web. I select yes, and the next time I publish, they are still there and it asks me the quesiton again. Anybody still watching this thread?

I have published all the pages probably 50 times since this first happened. Sometimes it is the only way that any changes made are reflected online. sometimes I can publish only changed pages and they will change online, there seems to be no pattern in that.

The files in those _vti folders are crytically important for publishing via FrontPage. It could be that a reinstall of FP server extensions will fix you.

I decided to just start from scratch. I had everthing working good, and was slowly moving all my old files to the new web. I moved a bunch of folders today, rather than individual files and also decided to delete a frama from my home page. I tried to publish and then same old error. Most frustrating. I don't want to start all over again!!!
