First may I thank everyone who has already looked.

With any luck I'll get the time this week to fix the issues addressed. If not well I have next Saturday afternoon "off" :-)

I've put up a sample lesson and would be very grateful if people could take a look. I'm especially interested in how usable people find it. Also all code will be in a text area for people to just take.

Question: would that be better on the page or in a seperate linked page?

One thing - Caz picked up on this in earlier review, how useful do you think the printability issue is? I spent a lot of time on it. The idea is similar to those magazines etc that you get once a week and collect the set.

(And before anyone asks I hjaven't validated and know the errors I'm going to get. This was "quick and dirty")

That includes the image. Just bunged it in for a joke and so people could see an image :-)

Goodness Shirley of all the people Iwouldn't want that to happen to .......

Phew, thank goodness for that, (there's a gorilla shaped hole in the ceiling in the room [:D]) Talk about surpised/shock/horror .....

Mozilla does sometimes throw a wobbly like that, rare but horrid when it does it.

Thanks again shirley I truly appreciate it - so much material that I want to make available and I really do want people to find it as easy as possible to use. BTW (whisper it who dare [;)]) some of the templates use tables for positioning. eek! Do you think I'll ever be forgiven?

the layout looks much better this way. i also dig the hover effects on the navigation box on the tut.

Be grateful I didn't put in a recording of

Believe me I was sorely tempted. But for what must be the first time in my life I resisted temptation. [sm=angel.gif]

I wish microsfot would hurry up and keep their promise about making IE6 support position fixed. That way the menu would scroll for everyone. As it is I may have to put in a "return to top" link every so often and I'd really rather not.

Also do you prefer the idea of copyable code in a separate page or on the lesson page itself?

Would you print those pages?

Lots of ????s as you can see. 23:15 as I type I'll check back in an hour or so before the nurses start yelling about the curative powers of sleep :-) Ah it feels just like being a toddler again .......

Oh well.

LBG Did you find the way I formatted the code and captioned it helpful. You're the sort of person I'm aiming that particular course at so your opinion would be most helpful. (BTW one lesson a week probably published @ weekends from now on.)

I didn't see a disclaimer, but I found few of the links worked. Possibly the Gorilla is shy and didn't enter the About Gorilla pages?

I tried it in IE 6, Mozilla Firefox, NN7.1 and Opera 7.

The link to continue is rather hard to find. I think it should come right below the paragraph.

Not only that link, but the font seems ugly, and the size could be one size larger I think.

Only other thing I do not care for is the orange rollover effect on the top.

(On the lesson page)
My last suggest for the actual content info on the lesson is to have a select/copy all link that will allow people to copy the code.

Forgot to add.. the table area should have the same color at the header. Where the background is purple and white text along with a black border.

Hey Gorilly, nice work.

Couple of things and it maybe due to my set-up here so I'll check it again when I get home.

All the pale blue text on white (h1, link, dt) seem fuzzy whereas the heading is crisp.

I love the mouseover effect where all the text local to the link shoots around the page. How'd you do that? [;)]

PS. on IE6

PPS. I've converted all those tables to css. Original size for all 21 pages was 2853Kb now, including style sheet, 630Kb and they load so fast! [:D]

I like the idea of being able to print out tutorials. I have tons of things printed. I would rather print the tutorial then read it on the comuter. Sometimes I come across some good material on css that in print preview does not look good and does not print to well, so I need to copy and paste into word in order to have it print for reading.

So great idea on the printing aspect of this.

Of course I like it. Nice and easy isn't a bad thing. Especially for someone as ignorant as myself. I notice you've made some changes since i last checked it on friday. Amazing how it works and acts differently in IE as compared to Firefox. I like the navigation in one spot. Something about a navbar that followed me around the page always made me uneasy like the person who built the page was saying "Look at me!" "Don't forget about me!". But that's just me and it's early monday am and I'm just getting started on my coffee, so my opinion means jack right now.

First my thanks to all of you.

Charles - at the moment the site is really at little more than "proof of concept" phase. For a variety of reasons I'm bringing it up and online almost a year early but things like "about gorilla" are ready to go in. Somewhat minimal information for that, we gorillas are shy :-)

Bobby thanks - you're in fact echoing an earlier thought of mine, which I dropped in the face of reviews, I think I'll go back to colour scheme "A" I agree also about the font. Perhaps I followed ximian's inspiration a little too slavishly. Thanks again you picked up on something about which I was in fact quite concerned. Easily remedied thank goodness.

The code will all go into text areas for selection and pasting. On the same page or on a page of its own? - Hmmm Perhaps on a "The result of this code is ..." with a screenshot and then the copy area on a page. I'll experiment with that.

Jaybee - yah the links and IE6 damn that 3px bug anyway. Fixing it. Hmmm fuzzy I would appreciate it greatly if you'd take a look in another setup if you can. That's the first time I've heard that, again should be fixable.

Deb - Glad about your reaction to the printout idea. In fact I've really geared the whole thing to printing. It'll be a cold day in hell before I go down the pdf route.

LBG - I'm not sure about the scrolling menu myself. Most people seem to like it but then most of the people IO know don't use IE.

OK, just had a look at home.

The h1's are fine here not fuzzy at all. I checked in IE6 and Firefox.

"Prerequisites" is the one that's all odd.

In IE6 it's fine but the text is a lot bigger at medium setting. In Firefox it looks almost as if the font is different............... I'll have another look..............

I could swear it's Times Roman in Firefox and Arial or similar in IE6.

PS. I like scrolling menus. One of my sites has a javascript version. It seems to help net newbies and if you have a long page it saves inserting loads of hypers.

I also like your jumping hypers. It's different. Shame it only does it once. [:(]

You're going to freak in a month or so when I get back for a few weeks. I've discovered a way to make IE support position fixed - and it (almost) validates. I'm checking a few things and need to doublecheck gecko rendering algo - but the mathematics works very nicely with everything resolving nicely to zero so there shouldn't be too many problems, ironing out the validation probs. Time is the biggest problem. I keep wishing for 48 hour days but for some reason or another the Universe keeps saying "no." [:o]

I was really turned off by the page layout, very confusing. You had alot of white space on bottom of opening page and then allot crammed in the top section.

i notice in your css, you specify colors with rgb. why do it that way instead of stating the color or using the hex code? is there a benefit to using the rgb option instead?

Thats right Jaybee for some things I don't specify fonts :-)

I might do it here but in general I don't believe in doing it for some things.

Dgeehot - that's how educational/portal sites "work" i did a lot of research on this over the years. Sorry you don't like it.

LBG - no difference whatsoever. The only thing is not to use CMYK as that is for printing only. I'll probably get around to shoving everything into either hex or rgb some day but its low priority and only for consistency. It depends on which I "set of numbers hex or rgb" I remember of my "favourite colours" at the time

There's also a tracking aspect but that is way beyond the scope of this forum.

Absolutely. IE6 was set to Times Roman default and some of the text looked awful. I changed it to Verdana and it's larger, clearer, much, much better.

My sites I normally specify Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif precisely for clarity. As your site is about learning and therefore reading, it needs to be legible and Times Roman is not good.

Either that or put some instructions on as to how to change your default font. You know the thing.............

yeah should definitely define some fonts. also the print thing is pretty important - especially if it's a technique or some piece of code with instructions that you several times, it's always handy to have printed versions. it's easier as well to look through your own stylesheet while studying someone else's instructions on paper.

I've got Saturday afternoon "off" so I'll fix those and a host of other details. I did think about the fixed menu issue quite a lot. I'm not always a fan of them myself but in this case I am I think. All the novices who've used the Danish versions of my courses have loved them. That sort of person is who all this is for so .......

And I don't mind YOUR fixed menu. I hate those DHTML ones that "jump" into place when you scroll...they're like an annoying fly or something. I think it's JUST LOVELY.

Glad you like it Karen. I have to agree with you about the dhtml menus. I really hate them. One thing I'm firm on about this site. No javascript - ever.

The main issue I have with it, and I do kick myself for this, is that the IA on the prototype site really is dreadful. Ironic when you consider that I preach that the IA must override everything else.

There simply wasn't time to do it for the late beta prototype that you've been reviewing but it is considerably more rational on the finished version.
