Google Rank - 4/26/2004 13:15:01
Ok I've been reading about this. I am still not sure if my 4/10 ranking is a good thing, is it? I spent a grand total of $50 on Overture along time ago. Overture wasn't a good solution for me.

There is a tutorial on outfront I think written by Kathy Nolan that I used to great deal.

Thanks!
Rich

Hm...I’m not quite sure to what you are asking...
Depending on the competition you are facing, PR 4 could be good or not.
First, I think that getting to PR 5 is fairly easy and you should aim for that anyway.
However, if the keywords you are targeting are very competitive you have to aim for at least PR 6.
Also, just because you have PR 6 doesn't mean that you actual PR is same as some other website with PR 6.
Due to the scale that Google is using (from 1-10) it is impossible to show the exact PR of your website. One PR 6 website can have 50 links more than the other PR 6 website, and have an actual PR (that Google sees) higher.
But PR is only one half of the equation. The other part is website optimization.
You could have PR 7 and still get worse rank than PR 4 website because of the poor optimization.

Thanks! I was asking what the 4/10 means. You answered that.

There's lots more to placing well in the results than your PR :)

This thread raises a question regarding the true meaning of Rank. It seems that some people refer to placement in the search engines as "Rank" when (to me) it appears to be a "listing" number order(1-10, Page 1, etc.).

It then becomes even more confusing when PR4 is referred to as "Rank" when the person may really be speaking about what position their site has in the search engine listings.

Adding to the confusion are references to the Google 'green bar' as Page Rank. Someone out there must be able to clear this up. If not, then an awful lot of posts may be misunderstood.

I agree with you but now a days pagerank & link popularity plays a vital role on SERPS. Without good pagerank non of the websites will get good traffic though it is well optimised.

Page rank is a back link count. google goes into it here...

SERP or search engine results pages is a overall ranking uising many factors, not just backlinks (allthough it is one piece in the overall). Google explains more here...

And the hype...

It's very interesting. many webmasters only focus on PR. However, PR is one of the criteria to search engine ranking. It is not uncommon that a lower PR site has a higher ranking than site with higher PR.

It has many other factors affecting ranking.

To me, I will focus on targetted traffic and not page rank. If I can drive targetted traffic, no matter it is overture, google type search engine, targeted link exchange, etc.. I will use it.

If u focus too much on PR, you may end up with high PR (if you work hard and lucky), but your traffic does not increase.

To be honest, rightly or wrongly, I stopped worrying about this stuff some time ago. I'm going it the old fashioned way while employing modern day methods. For me, that's advertising and word of mouth to build a loyal base and slowly but surely increase traffic.

Ad words is working very fine for me! I write my ads and run numerous campaigns at a time, evaluating which ones are more effective and determining why. One ad I wrote got such unbelievable high clicks compared to others that I run it much more than others, sometimes exclusively.

My site is educational and doesn't sell any products so I must rely on people clicking on Google Adsense links to make a little pin money. For my site, Amazon and Commission Junction sucked! I've studied and learned how making tweaks on certain pages within my site increases clicks and therefore returns.

When I was in Ireland this past March I had an opportunity to see what types of ads were served there, and presumably elsewhere in the world. That, too, gave me insights about strategies and changes I should make.

It's not easy when there are a gazillion digital camera sites out there. My site is still only an eight months old baby but the steady-but-sure growth I see makes me realize I'm going in the right direction.
