Swish2 button and loadmovie problem - 4/29/2004 1:55:20
Hi there,
I am quite a beginner in Swish. Basically, I know how to create buttons for linking movies and I know how to load a movie to the main one. Now I have a problem. I am not sure on how to create a "Next" button in the main movie, which upons clicking, will load an external movie. After that, I want the external movie to have a "Back" button that will bring the user back to the main movie.

I know a button can be used to load an external movie but I am not sure whether another button can be placed into that external movie to link it back to the main movie.

Now I move on to another problem.
I have created navigation buttons for my Swish movie, but everytime I PLACE a button, let's say the "Next" button in a new frame, I cannot change the actions of the button. Once I changed, the original button' s actions is also changed.

The action for the first button is, let's say Goto frame2, and I want the second button (on a different frame) to have an action Goto frame3.

Does this mean that I have to create every button and put them on different lines instead of PLACEing them on the same line? Boy, this does take time! Does Swish2 have something like a library where we can place the buttons so that we do not have to recreate them everytime we want to use them?

Thank you so much! :):)

Use Layers, one for each movie, and tell the button to load that particular layer

Hi Giomanach,
but then again, how do i put buttons in the linked external movie so that when clicked, it will return to the main movie? From what I know now, it can only navigate within itself....pls pardon my stupidity...:)

Make them all one movie, import the external ones, into different layers. Should solve it

pls pardon my stupidity

That's what you call it....:), and here's me thinking it's called a learning process:)

you must give each new button instance a unique name so that it is seperate from the other one

Thanks a lot, guys for the replies...

Giomanach, when you say import the external movies, do you mean that I import them as a sprite? And does a "layer" simply means the frames in the movie? Or u mean sth like that of Flash's layers?

Anyway, if I import the external .swf files as sprites, they would not turn out well...cos .swf files only stored frame info, not buttons, etc. So I cannot really import them as sprites. :)

Or, do you mean "layer" as the different levels where we put our loaded external movies?

Last but not least,
quote:

and here's me thinking it's called a learning process

is very nice to hear :)

Dan, that means I have to create different buttons (i.e., give different names to buttons) in order to do what I want. In Flash, however, I do not have to worry about these since I can just drag them out of the library. ;) Someone told me that I can achieve that in Swish, by using instances. hmm....but I need to create different instances....:)

I use swish a lot. step one on release>load movie into level one(or what ever level) the easiest way for positioning is to make the loaded movie the same size as the base movie. now in the loaded movie put your button actions to UNload movie from the same level you load into. you should always load external movies as it cuts on initial load time and only the movie the viewer wants to see is loaded.

now on to your other question... you are only placing the same button on different points of the timeline? if that is it then you can't change the button properties also. what you can do is use a sprite to change the button actions but it is way complicated to explain of i can't see your movie that you are working on.

I do a lot of "free-base" flash work, and have done something similar. I meant layers as in flash layers, I use Flash MX 2004, so I use more complex components etc and can do this a lot quicker and easier.

I would recommend you use Erics suggestion seeing as it's plain old swish:

hi reric, thanks for the reply. I have successfully loaded the external movie but I am still unable to solve the second problem.

You mentioned about using a sprite to change the button actions but I have no idea on how to do it. Actually what I want is very simple. I have created a button that will move to frame 15 when clicked. Now I want to reuse this button in another page but I want it to go to Frame 20 this time. How do I change the action of the button without copying and pasting the original button? I don't want to do this as this will create many layers for my movie and it looks untidy. Thanks again!!:)

I have written...

This is what I really mean...

I have created a button that when clicked, will LOAD frame 15. Now I want to reuse this button in another page but I want it to LOAD Frame 20 this time.

Sorry for the confusion
