Keywords, Meta Tags, etc - 4/30/2004 12:42:28
Hi:
I'm kind of unfamiliar with how keywords and meta tags affect where you are ranked in a search engine. Several years ago I had someone develop a theme for me and they put all sorts of unnecessary words in the head section. I have removed them (about 2 months ago) and reposted the changed pages, but when I pull up the site, the old source code still appears with these old words. Can anyone help me??? My boss is starting to think I lied about changing this stuff. Please let me know if you need more information

Thanks!!!

Mattie: I for one need more info...were these Unnecessary words" in meta tags? when you say you removed them, did yo udo it in notepad and save and when you "reposted" do you mean you published (ftp or ftontpage et.al) to the server? If you remove them on you machine, ttest locally to see if they are gone.

Dan:
Thanks for the response. If I go to the internet, navigate to my home page and view source, below is what I see:

<meta name="keywords" content="SEEK, Wisconsin, Temporary Staffing, Help Wanted, Staffing, Employment, Jobs, Hire, Temporary, Training, Work, Positions, Permanent, Direct Hire, Temp, Temporary, Opportunity, Industrial, Careers, Career, Temp-to Hire, Clerical, Administrative, Skilled, Human Resources, Workforce, Service,Animated, Backgrounds, backgrounds, bars, Buttons, buttons, custom themes, Design, design, fp, FP themes, fp98, fp98 themes, free, free fp themes, free FrontPage Themes, Front, Front Page Themes, FrontPage, frontpage, FrontPage, FrontPage 98, FrontPage 98 Themes, FrontPage Themes, FrontPage themes, frontpage themes, Frontpage Themes, frontpage themes, FrontPage2000, frontpage98, FrontPage98 themes, Gifs, gifs, Graphics, graphics, images, jpg, lines, Microsoft, microsoft, Microsoft FP graphics, microsoft frontpage, nof styles, page, Site, Styles, styles, Template, Templates, Templete, Templetes, Theme, theme catalog, theme design, Theme Designer, Theme Store, Theme-Pak, Themes, themes, theme sets, themesets, themeshop, tiles, tutorials, Web, Web Free, web site, website themes, art, artwork>

I removed all of the words in red, saved the file then published it to my web server (located off site). Why are the words still appearing when I view the source code or try to find my site in search engines???

Hope this is a little more information.

Thanks!!!

Because you did not update your web site.

Or your viewing the cache from your browser.

Edit: spelling and such

Because your site is in frames - and you did not remove them from the frameset page, only from one of the individual pages that is loaded into a frame.

Remove from each individual page that is loaded into the frameset, save, and publish again.

Thanks for the input, but I have checked all of that information. Any other changes that I have made to those pages have been posted with no problems. I've even searched the html code to make sure the words are gone from the entire site as well as done random searches myself of various pages. Any more ideas???

it looks like the pages "left.html" and "bottom.html" are fixed, but the page "index.html" still contains the offending descriptors. If you double click the file "index.html" you should get a different set of tabs across the bottom. click the one that says Frames page HTML and you should find the tags there...

Thank you again...I'm sorry to appear stupid, but this (below) is what is in my index.html page on my local computer. I made the changes again to the keywords area and a couple of minor design changes just to see if the correct pages were posting, then I published the changes. All other changes take place except the keywords. When I access the site over the internet and go to "view source" the old keywords are still there. I must be overlooking something.

It finally works...thanks to all of you for your help. I had been publishing my web site through FrontPage to an outside Web Host. For some strange reason, when I tried to publish the index.htm page, it wasn't working. I finally went into Explorer and just copied the page onto the web server, rather than publishing and it is now working!!!
