Setting Permissions in IIS6. - 5/3/2004 12:57:11
I have searched this forum and found similar issues, but didn't really find something that helped me. I am new to Windows 2003 Server and IIS6. Things have changed in the permissions interface and I am running in to a bit of a snag. I have a website with ASP pages that update a database. In IIS6 they define ROLES for permissions and I have gone in and setup the individual users that need rights to my site. My problem is that Just adding a user and giving them an Author Role doesn't allow them to edit the pages on the site in FrontPage. They can access the site and use the pages, but several need to be able to maintain the site and the only way I can make this work is to add them to the Administrators Local Group, and I don't want to do that. Can anyone help me understand what I am missing to all users with an Author Role to maintain my site?

I had not seen that particular document you referenced, but I have read many that talk about Roles in IIS6. In response to your question about giving them Advanced Author roles, I can assign a user the Administrator Role and they have the same problem. They can not use FP to access and modify the site. The only way for a user to be able to make anychanges to the site is for them to be in the Administrators Local Group in the User Management.

I have no way to test this, no Windows servers here... quote:
Author Add pages to the Web site and edit tasks and lists. This role contains all Contributor rights plus the following rights: Author Pages, Edit Tasks, and Author Lists. Advanced Author Edit a Web site in Microsoft FrontPage. This role contains all Author rights plus the following rights: Border Web, Theme Web, Design Lists, Link Style Sheets, Manage Tasks, and Recalc Web. It seems to say that the Author role can not use Frontpage, you need to be an Advanced Author to use FP

I agree with what you are saying, but as I mentioned I have assigned the user to the Administrator Role quote:
Administrator Manage a Web site or virtual server. This role contains all rights. and it still does not allow him to modify the pages on the site. I just don't understand what is going on.

I wish I could be more help. I use Linux servers. It seems as though the group that has the Advanced Author role(actually, all of the Frontpage groups) are missing some kind of domain access. What happens if you add those groups into the "Domain Users" security group. Please excuse my lack of clarity, I'm pulling this all out the old hard drive (my brain) and it's been a while. Come to think of it, I have the MCSE course around here somewhere, but I don't know if it covers IIS6...
