This may be a question for the web graphic forum...but since I'm a newbie, I thought I'd try my question here first! In Photoshop 7.0, when I "save for web" the colors fade. Why is that? I was using 5.0 previously and never experienced this. Many thanks in advance! Heidi

er have you got a few more details... are you working in rgb, 256 colours, cmyk in the original? what are exporting as gif,jpeg, png and what settings are you using?

I would check the quality of the slices as you export the images. Make sure they are set high enough to get a good picture.

I'm saving it as a GIF, RGB color, 256 colors. This happens with every file I save "for web" whether it's simple text with a layer effect or a photo that I edited. The quality doesn't change, it just looks like the colors have softened or have been lightened...

I've played around with the setting options in the "save for web" menu box, but nothing there is working. Should I start my file with different settings? I truly am a beginner with Photoshop...just one intro course...

what palette options are using in the gif - selective, adaptive...?

Perceptual...but even when I change that to one of the other options, such as adaptive or selective...the image doesn't go back to the original darker color...

In the "4-up" view the 2 top options ("original" and the first "gif" file) are lighter than the "real" original, but darker than the 2 on the bottom...if that helps at all...

I just tried the regular "save as" function (instead of "save for web" and it does the same thing...lighten the image...

For example, when trying to save it as a jpeg:

The quality is the highest: "12"
Format Option is baseline "standard"

Sigh...perhaps I should reinstall Photoshop?? Or is there a way to return all the settings back to the default/original settings?

are you starting with the web pallette <sp>?

Could the color you have chosen be "not web safe" and therefore has to be dithered?

Thanks! I'll check...but the strange part is that this happens when I import images and only change the border of it, not the colors...

As far as I know, I'm not working with any color profiles...at least not intentionally! When I create a new file, the mode is "RGB color." Under the color side menu, I have only marked: RGB color sliders, and RGB spectrum. Where else can I check for color or "saving" issues...???

could you post a link to an example of the psd file and one to the exported image so we can see. I only have ps6 at home but i can see if it looks different in those.

I have Photoshop CS (bought it thinking I was getting 7.01 over eBay[:)]), I might be able to solve the problem with that. Post a link as Dave has requested and we'll see what we can do

p.s. if you have an image open (in PS not image ready) then go to Image > mode > convert to profile. you'll see what the source space is called -i.e. the current one. what does it say?

When I opened a random photo I recently took, the source space is:
sRGB IEC61966-2.1

destination space is:
working CMYK - U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2

I believe you have something there with the profile question. When I did a "save as" then "jpeg" I was "commanded to" select the color option that states: "ICC profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1". The other option is grayed out. ("Use proof setup: Working CMYK")

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm not familiar iwth the ICC profile, but I'll spend some time researching it!

They look the same to you?? The files posted by Dan are still washed out when I view them. Dan--did they stay bright and original for you?? Did the files look the same to you when you viewed them?? Were hte "psd" files brighter?? The picture of the hands with the pennies should have real life color not faded. The 2nd file titled "benefitsmaster" should have a dark, dark blue, almost black background. However, when saved as a ".gif" or ".jpg" the color is more blue, and less dark. What color is it to you?? Is it almost black??

This is so very strange...it must be a setting in my computer somewhere then. And I'm at a loss at what to do.

Oh well! At this point I'll just uninstall reload Photoshop and see if that helps.

I am really amazed at how helpful everyone has been in this forum. Thank you again and again. I'll let you know if reloading PS helps.

the psd you sent looks washed out when i view it (the psd) in photoshop

if you use ctrl+L (image > adjust > levels) you'll see in the histogram ( http://members.surfeu.fi/dave_pirjo/test-area/temp/pennies_histogram.gif ) there is nothing down the lower end towards black - hence the washed out look

after a quick levels 'tweak' i exported as jpeg and got this

which even after allowing for differences in monitors should look reasonable to most people. (might be atad on the dark side...)

have you got any gamma settings setput anywhere? it's a bit puzzling but i i think it's to do with there being very little information towards the 'shadows' in the image. if the original image (pennies.psd) looks different to you when you view it in PS than my screenshot then there could be something wrong with the way your PS is setup and it only previews correctly in image ready/save for web

I have been having the same problem for the last week with photoshop but have actually solved it for sure!!!

The answer is simple:

Go to Edit - Color Settings

Under the RGB BOX - Select - monitor RGB - Colormatch RGB

Do this and all your problems are solved!!!!

Since this is the newbie forum, what's the "easy" way to export typical digital camera photos for the Web using PS or Imageready?

For example, what if I want to resize a photo to 150x200 and optimize it for the Web. If anyone has the time, I'd appreciate simple step-by-step directions.

(The computer I took over has PS7 - looks like the currently incomprehensible software will be quite useful, but haven't cracked "Classroom in a Book" yet.)

When you use the "Save for Web" function the image shown is how it will appear without color management, which would be the case someone seeing your image in the browser. Outside of the "Save for Web" function, you can see the Web version of your image by the command View, Proof Setup, Monitor RGB.

I think I've found a solution even if I don't completely understand it myself.

I recently changed my RGB Working Space to Adobe RGB 1998, and then I had the exact problem you described: I would open up a CMYK image, convert to RGB and save for Web—then I'd see a much lighter image.

The workaround solution for me was to convert the CMYK image to RGB using the Image/Mode/Convert to Profile command (from the Image Menu). Then I choose Apple RGB as my destination space. This overrides the Adobe RGB 1998 color space that it would normally convert to if I simply chose Image/Mode/RGB.
Now with the image in the Apple RGB colorspace I don't see this lightening effect when saving as JPEG or "Saving for Web"

I'd love for someone to explain exactly what's happening here, but this should atleast give you a proper solution.
