IIS Newbie - 5/4/2004 9:48:48
Okey dokes ... here goes ...

I want to be able to test my sites on my own computer before I publish them live. At the moment I have some test sites that I use - which is OK but I don't always want to use them.

I am running Win 2K with SP4 & looks like IIS 5

Can I run more than one site on my computer?
They are for my benefit alone (playing with different ideas etc) so no third party gets to access them.
or do I need to run Windows server edition? (The IIS notes seem to indicate that you can only run one site from the wwwroot folder)

thanks

You can run more than one site, but they are all subwebs of localhost. You'll address them all as http://localhost/subweb1, http://localhost/subweb2, etc. This is how I've run all my development sites for the past 5 years, and have no problems publishing. Just make sure not to leave absolute links to http://localhost/...

If you want to truly replicate the server experience with multiple sites at the top level, you'll need the server edition.

What Richard has said is true, but you can host mulitple sites on Windows, but not with IIS. You will need Apache it yo plan on doing that.

Apache is not a Windows program/server... did you mean 2003?

Apache does you zero good if your target platform is ASP.
