Design/SEO Question - 5/4/2004 16:14:39
At the top of most of my websites, I have a logo, a search box, and then hte shopping cart contents. Google tends to pick up from the top down now, and they give the synopsis of the site (even though I have meta tags) as search shopping cart Total $0.00, etc.

Should I design around this? Have others had problems?

The webbots won't have gotten far enough into/down the page to get the pricing etc. They read the HTML doc transmitted to the user, so unless you have your order.asp?id=XXX type variable enabled etc, it will show as empty. The bot's don't order anything to put in the shopping basket, they just read the coding on the page.

It's nothing for you to worry about. But I would say have the Shopping Cart details, and search box to the top right of the page so that users can see what they have spent, and can access the search function easier.

Any good to you?

Dan

the site I was referring to is http://mistydesires.com.

Google was pulling up only the title and then the first content it came across. I had this done on other sites, but moved the cart contents and search, but this site needs it.

The problem - Using tables. The webbots only go so far into the content of the HTML doc. I'm currently writing an article to help epople create pages htat will increae their google ranking etc. If you can hold on, I will email you a copy of teh article once finished. It also means you may have to go from tables to CSS layout.

No and no.

Tables are not a problem with search engines and webbots will go as far as you reasonably need (depending on many variables).

Summer - Google does not currently have your site listed... Where are you seeing your results?

They had it listed (and cached) yesterday, but when installing the SSL from GoDaddy, they switch you from a shared IP to a static, so it is gone :(.

It seems to be the new thing for my sites... changed when the algo stuff changed as well. For instance :

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=ttandme.com

Christening Dress, First Communion Dress, Baby Gift Set, Pageant ...
TT and Me, Advanced Search. Shopping Cart. Qty, 0. Total($), 0.00.
Home | All Categories | Contact Us, Account | Cart | Checkout. Categories. ...

I changed the layout of the tables on a few other sites and have all of the information as images at the top, then the nav on the left, content in middle and cart on right and don't have this issue.

It is just a real PITA because I have to do this all by myself (besides the afore mentioned I need to hire someone but can't because my county doesn't allow it).

I don't see how that would be a problem. I use both shared and static and switch IP's all the time.

Anyhow, I will make a new post to address the Google description issue. It seems that not many here understand it and I don't want to bury new information in a post....

It has always been that you need a dedicated IP address to host an SSL cert, right?

I have a script somewhere around here those shows what Google most likely will read.. I will have to look for it, I know I posted the link here on the forum once.

Ok, found it: http://www.gidsearch.com/test/extractor.php

I'm not exactly sure how accurate it is though, but it will give you a basic idea.

Oh, I misread your earlier reply. I thought you said something about changing IPs and having it work with SSL. Doh!

I think that the extractor extracts the entire page, it might not be as helpful as I thought.. :)

The hosting was set up, etc. and THEN they added the SSL, changing to a dedicated IP.

Hey, I would like to see this article also. I am inclined to disagree w/ you on this one, I have never had Google have a problem finding content on any of our sites that used tables in the past.

May be this is the problem. Googlebot use DNS zones alongside with IP and domain names while indexing the site ;)
