no "WWW" in address??? - 5/4/2004 16:32:06
hi all!
the other day someone told me about web addresses with no "www" in the address ... what does this do? what's the advantage?
how do you go about setting this up?

Just ask your host to set it up so that your site can be accessed either way.
Advantages? Hmmm... I have never had a website that COULD NOT be accessed with the domain alone. I think most internet savvy people no longer use the prefixes when directly typing a domain name.

DNS = Domain Name System
TJ,
www.example.com is a sub-domain of example.com. Most hosts will have added both by default, although it is possible to point them to 2 different locations - but a bit unwise due to marketing/branding concerns.

If it's an apache server, they'd just need the following in the virtualhost directive for their site:
ServerAlias: www.domain.com domain.com
The www symbolic link is just there for people to use if they're used to putting things into that directory. It's humerous how many websites can't be accessed without the www. Especially those that advertise without the www. in the address.
