Search Engine site descriptions - 5/5/2004 15:34:46
I have noticed some confusion about how the Googlebot (and other search engine spiders) index sites. Most recently, there have been questions about the site description that is displayed under the link title in the SERP's.

Here is a test - type in your site (with extension) in Google (or Yahoo) and read the description that is under your title. OK?

Now, type in some keywords that you know will bring your site up in the SERP's. Look at the description.... Notice anything?

Try using other key word combinations and compare your site descriptions. What do you see?

Most search engines serve up *dynamic* descriptions of your site based upon the keywords that were used. So, your site description will more often than not be different depending on the terms used.

With this knowledge and a bit of trial and error - you can greatly influence what the description of your site will be.

Just to test your test:
Please be aware, this site has NO meta tags as yet.

Google search for http://www.giomanach.com :

. : : Welcome to the Imagination of Giomanach : : .
Can you imagine what it is like to be so full of creativity yet to you are
told you are too young to be taken seriously? I live in this world... ...

Keyword search for Imagination - I'm nowhere to be seen within the first 20 pages of results - no suprise

I know this is due to the fact that I have no metas on the site yet, but the fact that I am on the results for one of the criteria is enough for me at the moment. I haven't even submitted the site to Google. I will do in the near future when I have metas on the pages.

Dan

Well... Yes, in a few areas.

Just to test your test:

Where is your test? I can't see it so I did one for you.

I used a phrase off your website "Through the power of imagination and the tool of imagery" - I placed it in quotes and it looks like there are exactly 3 sites that match that quote in Googles index (the other 2 are making the same quote).

Here is the description that Google gives for your site based upon the above phrase:

quote:

... Through the power of imagination and the tool of imagery, all things are possible. The thought first, and then the thing. It is an immutable law. ...

Here is the description based upon your 1st post:
quote:

Can you imagine what it is like to be so full of creativity yet to you are
told you are too young to be taken seriously? I live in this world... ...

They are different.

This ends the test...

I don't think adding Meta tags will have much of an improvement for your ranking. It may have a little bump as you increase your keyword density, but Meta's alone are not going to vault you into the top 10.

Uhh.... You don't need to submit your site to Google. You are already in their index.

I'm working on getting my weaker areas sorted out, it's not easy

I know it won't increase the page rank, but I was hoping it would increase my chances of being found due to keywords rather than content (there's that content is dead long live the link thingy again)

You have cleared things up a bit more for me. Thanks

Dan
