Is My Redesign Ready? - 5/5/2004 18:38:24
http://www.design-a-website.com/redesign/index.htm

The only page not working is the testimonials page; still waiting on those to come in.

Here is my current site.

http://www.design-a-website.com

I like the colors of my new site better, plus it's all valid HTML 4.01 Transitional and CSS.... and the design is all CSS. I just didn't get the validation graphics and on all the pages yet. (and I didn't change the graphic like Jaybee suggested in another thread; I will...:))

Hmmm... I see a few things that might look better changed.

First, I don't particularly care for the left side adjusted page. In 1024x768, it looks somewhat odd. Either have 100% widths, or design using the center of the page as your main area.

You might even want to play around with the template if you decide to move it to the center. You could add a border around everything, or maybe even a different background color (have the content area one color, and the background of the entire page another color.

By the way, add some "" to your quote.

Have the elgant look to them though. The ones that point in the left/right and have the top part the large ball, and the bottom circles around and is skinny.

Bobby,

forgive me, but um....I don't know what you are trying to tell me here.

As to the 100% widths; you mean, make the divs say, 20%/80 % instead of the fixed pixel widths that I have now?

Gorilla -

THANKS!

Take up the entire page, or center your template.

Sites look ugly when you have them left justified. Right now, in 1024x768, the site looks kinda weird since it is so small in width, and only takes up 70% the screen.

when clicking from page to page, your title banner tends to shift up and down a bit. and the navigation links shift left and right a bit as well. not sure about the .:: ::. on the nav, but that's just a personal preference. very nice job overall though. simple, yet precise.

Bobby,

I think I've fixed it so that it will take up the entire page.

np

your navigation box is still a bit jumpy though. it sat still in IE, but was most noticeable in navigator and firefox. opera wasn't as bad, but it appears that the box is a tad bit larger on the index page than the others. but test it out in some of those browsers and you'll see what i'm talking about. then again, i could just be going nuts! :)

hmm. that's odd, as there is nothing different from page to page in it; I just copied and pasted...I think. I'll go look again...

dan - thanks!!!

It is still "jumpy" when you go from home to any other page.

thanks dave, I got it fixed and all pages now validate! got my meta tags up, keywords, description, no image toolbar, no smart tags...all I gotta do now is make up a robots.txt page, and get some content on the link exchange and validation pages and we're set!

Bobby - that jumping thing is bizarre...I don't see it at all in IE or Moz, and of course, in NN4.7 the site looks like it's been through a blender..but hey, that will come later. I highly doubt that I'll get many potential customers using that browser. I think the only time I've been visited by NN4 in the past year and a half was when I did it myself.

looks like you've almost gotten it fixed. it looks like from your index page to everything below, the box shrinks just enough to be noticeable from page to page. My default browser is Firefox and i noticed it happening in all browsers but IE (but we all know how stable IE is . . .). When clicking all links (except for home) everything looks great, except for navigator where the 'about karen' link jumps like the home link. I looked at your style sheet and i could be way off, but i noticed that your navbox and mainbox equal out to 95% of the page and the left offset of the navbox is 8px. That doesn't equal 100% or the page and since it doesn't appear that you set 100% of the page to be used, that could be causing the jump in your box. although, that doesn't account for the other pages not jumping. i need to quit trying to do this before coffee . . .

big on doing realtor sites, huh? :)

great job!

one quick point. I think you might want to think about doing your own text link to the validators and get rid of the graphics the colours clash to my eye. Also of course you write your own text :-)

I didn't catch that 8px thing. thanks for pointing that out to me....I'll see if making it 5% fixes it. That jumpy thing is annoying, and I thought I fixed it, as I couldn't see it happening except going to the Home page.

Realtors - yah, that seems to be my thing. LOL. I would like it if I could get some realtors from someplace other than Lake Wallenpaupack though. There are only SO MANY WAYS you can write up about the 13 acre man made lake with 52 miles of shorline in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern PA and has been a source of hydroelectric power for over 70 years...ha ha ha.

I have TWO MORE realtor jobs pending. There are only about forty more realtors in the area, so.....

I know, those little graphics are hideous when placed on my site. Would I be violating any kind of rules if I made my own graphics to match the site, a little smaller? I also want to write up a small article on what it means to be "valid" etc...and link to it next to the graphics.

Well, the thing is...I do have a lot of text on the site and it's very low on the graphics end. I'd kind of like to have a couple of small pics instead of more text.

In fact, I think there are only four graphics on the entire site, and two of them are on a page that isn't linked to anything (it's a payment page that I send to people who want to pay me by credit card)

I think having an overload of "text" is almost as bad as too many graphics (not from a bandwidth / load time perspective, but from a "block it out visually and ignore it" perspecitve.)
