Links in Acrobat - 5/11/2004 13:43:25
Is there a way to put links in a .pdf file so users do not have to press the back button?

I've done as Dave suggests. Open a new window with a diffrent size, remove the navbar from the browser and put a close window button on it.

Works nice for me.

You can put links in a PDF document but you need the full version of Acrobat to do it which is quite expensive. You can buy cheaper software for creating PDF's but I don't know if they support creating links.

Or, you can do what I do. Using a small navigation frame at the top and a script to read the lower frame based on the querystring you can open pdfs that can easily be navigated from. Can post the code if you're interested. Works very well for large quantities of pdf files so that you don't have to modify each one...

Here is a screenshot of one such pdf

If you mean that where you see URL's in a PDF file you want them to be presented as links, there should be a switch (an option) when you export or 'print' your file to a pdf. Each application is different. In Indesign you export the document to see the switches. In word you have to create using the Adobe Distiller. You have to have the full version in order to do this.

There are a number of ways to navigate within a pdf - if you are using the full product.

Make bookmarks as a contents list : use the bookmarks tab

It is alway clumsy to do linking in Acrobat, you just have to look at the Help files, grab some coffee and usually a few asprin too!

The other ways to link follow:-

To navigate within the document use the links tab ( like a two link chain), select the text or graphic that you want to be visible as a hyperlink. To set the destination , navigate to the page you want. This is difficult to describe so look at the screenshot for some settings.

You can use the link toolbar to specify a web address as the destination of the hyperlink. I find this easier than doing internal links!

Of course if your source document comes from packages like Word, the hyperlinks can all be tranferred to the resultant pdf automatically. But sometimes that doesn't happen and you just have to work in the pdf with Acrobat to insert links.

This probably hasn't made much sense, but if you try hard with the Acrobat help files you can do it.
