Cannot Open Database - 5/12/2004 17:14:11
Hi,

I've upgraded to FP 2003 and my databases will not open. I get the following message:

Microsoft Access cannot open this file. This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems. To open the file, copy it to your machine or an accessible network location.

I checked that link out and I don't get it. It says Access is not designed to open a database by using a URL address. I have and still can open all my databases in Frontpage 2002 but not 2003.

What version of Access are you running?

I've been using FP '03 with Access '03 for a couple months and it works fine...

FP '03 runs Sharepoint... I'm not sure it will open an Access database < 2003

I haven't tested it, but I've seen this problem 4 or 5 times now, and it always has to do with FP '03 and an older version of Access.

I am running FP2003 with Access 2002. Also, I went to a machine where I have FP2002 but couldn't not open the Access .mdb file that was created in FP2003. Basically, I can't open the .mdb file from anywhere!

This is strange...

Until a fix can be located... have you thought about grabbing the Access db with FTP, modifying it and then uploading it again?

In many cases (depending on the size of the database) this method can be faster than waiting for FP top open it... then close it again when you're done...

:)

Are we missing something here?

In order for an Access database to be opened by FrontPage, a web page must be created that contains programming to open that database. I hope that you are not trying to do it like this:

quote:

http://servername/databasename.mdb or ftp://servername/databasename.mdb
because it won't work.

Frontpage has a "bot" called a DRW (Database Results Wizard) that will set up the web page for you.

The frontpage help for this topic is pretty extensive, try that. See what happens...

Have you tried "Exporting" the database?

Whenever you open a databse from FP, a copy is downloaded to the temp files anyway.
Export it to your local file directory, make your changes, compact and repair it (each time) and "Import" it back to your web site.

When working with FP2002 I can navigate to the fpdb folder in the Navigation pane and double click my .mdb files and they automatically open in Access for editing. I can drag and drop to and from my desktop any .mdb file and edit.

When working with FP2003 the .mdb files do not open and when I drag/drop to the desktop they are shortcuts to the files not the files themselves. When double clicking to open in Access I receive the error message the first poster posted above.

Our networking dept's solution - load an old version of FP2002 ... that does work, I can't deny it.

Thanks for the feedback ... appreciate your time.

That's how I've done it with FP '03 and Access '03... just double click the file in the list and it opens (eventually)

Usually takes 2-3 minutes to open, and another 3-4 minutes to save and close it...

FTP is usually faster...
